Audyssey Bronze DSP Processing
Denon was the first AV receiver manufacturer to embrace Audyssey DSP processing and we've introduced more Audyssey-equipped models than any other. The AVR-S920W features the Audyssey Bronze suite of DSP functions including MultEQ. With the supplied measuring microphone and mic stand, the AVR-S920W generates a series of test tones at each speaker, including the subwoofer, and then creates a full set of precision digital filters that optimize the entire speaker system and the room's acoustics.
Audyssey Dynamic Volume lets you listen at reduced volume levels and it prevents abruptly loud volume variations (such as commercials) and Audyssey Dynamic EQ ensures a smooth, natural tonal balance at any listening level.
Dual-Zone, Dual-Source Multi-Room Audio
You can connect a 5.1/5.2 surround speaker system in the main room and also connect a pair of stereo speakers in another room. Listen to movies or music in the main room while others can enjoy stereo sound from another source in another room, with independent volume controls for each room.

My understanding is that this receive is almost identical to the 2015 model (S910W), with a couple of improvements (from [...]):
- Dual band 802.11n Wifi (2.4Ghz, 5Ghz)
- Auto Lip sync delay (increase from 200ms to 500ms)
- RC Select (allows changing of an HDMI source while the AVR is in Standby mode)
The last feature (RC Select) is actually useful. It allows switching HDMI inputs without turning on the receiver. This is useful is my setup, because I sometimes don't need to use the speakers attached to the receiver, I just use a pair of wireless headphones connected to the TV. In the "Standby mode", the S920W lets the sound go to the TV, which let the sound go to the headphones. When I turn the AVR on, the sound goes to the speakers connected to the AVR. This is extremely convenient.
Another useful feature is the 2 HDMI outputs, if you use ARC. I have a Vizio M70-C3, and it turns out I need 2 HDMI outputs to get sounds from the SmartApps of the TV. The reason is ARC comes from the TV's HDMI 1 port, while the HDMI 5 port is the only 4k@60hz capable port. So, in my setup, I configured the AVR to send the picture though its HDMI output2 connected to the TV's HDMI 5, and I connected TV's HDMI 1 port (arc) to the AVR's HDMI output 1 (the ARC compatible output). This sounds maybe a little complicated, but in that setup, the picture always goes to the HDMI 5 port of my TV, and the sounds always goes to the AVR's speakers, even when I am using the TV's smart apps (netflix, hulu, etc.). I should mention another important feature of the HDMI 5 port of the Vizio M7 is the low input lag associated to that port (~20msec). The other HDMI ports have a much higher lag. Talking about input lag, the S920W has the capability to turn off all video processing ("Bypass") on selected HDMI input, minimizing the additional input lag introduced by the receiver to almost 0. This is useful in my case, as some the of HDMI inputs are used for gaming (Computer, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS 4), while other inputs are used for video (Roku 3, Tivo).
Another useful feature of this AVR is the fact is can scale HDMI signal up to 4k@30Hz. This is useful in my setup because the HDMI 5 port of my Vizio M70 does not like signal inferior to 1080p -- it shows a warning with 1080i for example. By having the AVR scaling everything up to 1080p, I can still use the HDMI 5 port of the TV without problems.
All in all, at this point, I am mostly using this AVR as a glorified 8-port HDMI switch and it works perfectly. I should also mention that I have not run into a single case of signal loss and flakiness, which seems to be common in general when switching multiple HDMI/HDCP inputs. It makes me think these 4K HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2 chipset are finally reaching maturity.
One final note: The AVR came in its original box, inside another box. The original box didn't show any sign of having be previously opened, and was in pristine shape.
Given I am 100% satisfied with the HDMI switching capabilities, I now need to figure out what kind of good speakers to buy to go with this AVR.
The unit is great. Shipped in its original box (not a box in a box) that suffered a little corner damage but it didn't affect the contents. Someone taped the shipping label to a torn off piece of cardboard and then taped it to the manufacturer's box (Seriously).
-HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 compliant which makes connections a no brainer and a little future proofing.
-Supplied measuring microphone and mic stand which generates a series of test tones at each speaker, including the subwoofer, and then creates a full set of precision digital filters that optimize system. Easy to use although it incorrectly identified a phase switch on one speaker (the instructions state that this is a possibility and to just move on)
-The ARC is great and make controlling other equipment a piece of cake
-Very good video and sound processing
-Firmware updates, music streaming, Airplay all work perfectly without a hitch. Wireless is simple to set up.
-3D/4K video processing as expected
-Includes some stickers that help identify speaker wire connections
-The remote is intuitive and easy to use even in a darkened room
Cons: (most of these are nits except the first one)
-One of the reasons that I chose the S920 was the component connections (2 in, 1 out) in addition to the multiple HDMI connections. I have an older projector which is component that I wanted the ability to connect. I expected this unit to do what my older Onkyo or Yamaha units did and take the HDMI input feeds and downrate them to 1080i and output them through the component connections to the projector. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. The Denon only feeds the component inputs to the component output. So, basically, the component connections are useless unless you have multiple video devices connected. To be fair, Denon doesn't state one way or the other in their documentation. It was my assumption. Knowing this however, the S720 may be a better or cheaper option for some.
-You must have a video output (TV or monitor) connected to complete the initial setup unless you like using the force to figure out the options. The on panel display is not that informative for setup. So for those who want to quickly set up the unit for music and listen while they complete the rest of the set up, you had better be beyond padawan status. Perhaps if I used the manual...
-About that manual, there is not one included. There is a quick start card that basically states "hook up a TV and follow the instructions." Denon does have a very informative (283 pages) pdf manual that you can download from their website. For such a well written manual, it's a shame that it's not included.
All in all, an excellent unit for the price. I can't give it five stars but it's close.
I would highly recommend the Denon AVR-S920W and would buy it again if I needed another one.
