When it arrived I was surprised how much lighter it was from my old receiver, I hooked everything up and proceeded through the setup of the device and DANG it made everything sound new again.. Speakers sounded just as clear and sharp as when they were first purchased, the room setup, Great room size is 28x18, was dead on and now I can enjoy music again.. :) This goes to show what a great product this is and if my wife can use it without 20 questions on how to do this and that, then I can enjoy it more!
Thank you for such a solid product!
The big disappointment was that the high rate video would not pass without glitches and sometimes complete failure (snow). I spent a day tweaking input levels and turning conversion on/off. Even replaced the 8k 48Gb/s cables I had bought for the new unit with another set, but to no avail (cable length 3 feet before and 6 feet after the receiver - not long at all). Followed all the "tips" on Denons website, but finally called their support. After an hour with a tech (that was busy caring for his baby - presumably at home), I had to give up and get an RMA for the unit. I would have ordered a replacement unit, but for the fact that the tech finally announced that it is "normal" for the receiver to take up to a minute to sync the HDMI signal... not to mention it cutting out in mid-show or not syncing at all! I went back to my old receiver, and purchased an external switch for the video instead.
I sent a request to customer service and their advice was to hire someone to help with the programming of the remote -- Thanks Denon CS!!!
I do like the receiver, it works well and does all that they say it should. Paired with a new Klipsch 5.1 speaker system it really is great. I just wish I could figure out the remote since right now, I need to use 3 different remotes (Dish satellite, Denon AV receiver, and the TV). It just seems that I should be able to use the ONE Denon remote to run the system.
Frankly, 0 stars for the customer service but 5 stars for the receiver itself, and 0 stars for NO printed manual.
The 4700 works well with the Fire TV Stick 4K plugged into an HDMI port, and supports Dolby Atmos apps including Disney+ and Tidal. Other devices, such as cable boxes, may have some HDMI handshaking issues that are problems with the devices and not with the receiver. After finding some workarounds, it works with the Xfinity X1 4K cable box.
I could not get Alexa to work with HEOS on the 4700. It keeps saying the 4700 is offline, even though it isn't. Alexa will power the 4700 on and off, so it is not a complete failure. Other than that, HEOS works well, and supports Amazon Music Ultra HD Hi Res Audio playback at the correct sampling rate. It also handles DSD 2.8 and 5.6 MHz streaming from the PC using a DLNA music server. Sadly, it does not handle DSD 11.2 MHz.
Multichannel DSD and FLAC files can be played back via a Blu-Ray player that will send the bitstream over HDMI. The Oppo UDP-203, for example, streams these from the DLNA music server and they will play back in multichannel 5.1 on the 4700. Multichannel SACD discs will also play back well over HDMI, and the 4700 will decode multichannel DSD 2.8 MHz using it's own DAC. Multichannel DSD 5.6 MHz will be sent as PCM to the 4700 and played back in multichannel 5.1.
Naturally, the raison d'etre of the 4700 is to play back 4K UHD Blu-Ray in 4K/24p with Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. it will handle these beautifully. It will also handle 4K60 in Dolby Digital Plus from Netflix and Prime Video, either from a smart TV app over eARC or via the Fire Stick 4K or other steaming device. Dolby Surround will enhance these to use the height speakers if available, but will also enhance the sound of a regular 5.1 or 7.1 system.
Unfortunately, there is only one HDMI 2.1 input port, so only one of the next gen game players like the PS5 or Xbox Series x can be plugged into it. The recommendation is to plug the second player into a capable Smart TV's HDMI port and use eARC to send the audio back to the receiver. I'm only planning on getting one of those players so that is not an issue to me. The HDMI 2.1 input port will only handle 40Gbps instead of 48Gbps. There are You Tube videos addressing this issue, but it shouldn't be an issue for a few years.
All in all, this is a great receiver for someone who needs to upgrade into a more modern receiver to meet the AV needs of the next few years. It is not future proof by any means, but that is the way it is for receivers of late.

Not really a fan of Heos though... It's a clunky way to integrate Google Assistant.
cons, every time i am casting it need to manually switch to where ever the crhomecast is connected on the inputs, not like my old receiver when i cast it automatically turn on the receiver or switch it to chromecast when the receiver is in use in another input.
Chnaged for this Denon 4K...
impressive quality, so easy to set up, with new applications ....
conclusion: a high end product with a competitive price....very satisfied !
