The denial of the Holocaust has no more credibility than the assertion that the earth is flat. Yet there are those who insist that the death of six million Jews in Nazi concentration camps is nothing but a hoax perpetrated by a powerful Zionist conspiracy. This book traces the history of Holocaust denial. Convincing and well-researched, Lipstadt's study is a solid work on the formation and significance of the neofascist movement. Her argument, that the distortion of historical truth threatens human society, is alarming and still relevant to America today. Worth a read.

This is a carefully researched and well written study of what holocaust deniers and revisionists have been saying and writing since the late 1940s. Ms Lipstadt makes very clear their political agendas, sometimes hidden and sometimes not, such as anti-semitism and the political rehabilitation of nazism. Of course, a lot has happened since the book's publication in 1994: changes in the law on racial incitement and holocaust denial, the unsuccessful lawsuit of David Irving, amongst others, and the huge expansion of hate sites on the internet. Indeed, the internet is now (unlike in 1994) the main media outlet for those wishing to deny the existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz or claiming that allied crimes were worse than nazi ones. The author suggests rightly that holocaust deniers will increasingly try to find a respectable and intellectual image for their claims. This the net allows them to do. It is perhaps desirable that a revised edition of this book appears soon to analyse more recent developments. Ms Lipstadt's account of the odd careers of many deniers, such as self-styled expert on gas chambers Fred Leuchter, is masterful. She really does know her enemies.

I really enjoy Ms Lipstadt's work. She has written many books regarding the Holocaust. This book was recommended and it is an amazing testament of the unrelenting furor she has regarding the subject of Holocaust denial. Lipstadt chronicles her experiences with deniers and then talks about how dangerous it is to deny the Holocaust and how dangerous it is to even acknowledge or legitimize holocaust deniers. I applaud her work.

I see the same old "deniers" denying this book by proffering their "same old-same old" misinformation. Very much appreciate what one reviewer brought out about the Holocaust: that even at Nuremburg trials the Germans/Nazis did not try to deny the Holocaust. Nor did Adolf Eichmann on trial 15 years later.

Highly recommended is "Rise of the Nazi Party" ... EXCERPT from the movie: "This is the story of how Hitler and the Nazis bent an entire people to their will and groomed them into participation in the most evil regime in history."

Excellent in-depth DVD documentary detailing through the voices of a number of historians how Hitler lured the WWII German people into adoring him, glorifying him and following him into the most evil and criminal regime in history.

Most WWII Germans did, indeed, enthusiastically support Hitler's Nazi regime.

There are 7-10 internationally recognized and respected historians narrating this documentary who are experts on WWII history.

Good, slightly out-of-date overview

Lipstadt's book is a good overview of Holocaust denial twenty-odd years ago. She does a thorough job showing us who the deniers were and are, as well as what their arguments are. She shows us the history of those who claim the Holocaust has been greatly exaggerated, from early pioneers like Harry Elmer Barnes and Austin App through their heirs today, such as Mark Weber and Bradley Smith. She shows that the premier Holocaust denier organization, the Institute for Historical Review, was founded by Willis Carto and David McCalden, tells us who they were and who they've associated with, and tells us about Carto's other Jew-hating projects, like the Liberty Lobby and the Noontide Press.
Lipstadt gives enough attention to the deniers' arguments that anyone who believes in or wants to refute that stuff would do well to read this book. She refutes some of the main arguments and shows the lack of qualifications and credibility of some of the characters involved in Holocaust denial, such as Fred Leuchter.
She has some interesting things to say about why people deny the Holocaust, such as the sheer unbelievability and horror of it. Worth quoting:
"Rationally one would like to assume that, since Leuchter has been exposed as a man without the qualificatons necessary to perform this analysis[of the gas chambers], and since his work has been demonstrated to be scientifically and methodologically fallacious, the destiny of the Leuchter Report would be the dustbin of history. But the Holocaust and, to only a slightly lesser degree, Holocaust denial itself remind us that the irrational has a fatal attraction even to people of goodwill. It can overwhelm masses of evidence and persuade people to regard the most outrageous and untenable notions as fact."p. 181.
I have a few minor quibble with Lipstadt. For example, she says that the University of London has no record of Richard Harwood as either a member of the staff or student body. In Harwood's tract, Did Six Million Really Die, it says he is "with the University of London," but it also clearly states that Richard Harwood is a pseudonym, so of course that university would have no record of him.
