We don’t get to choose the reality we want—no matter how badly we want it. We can, at best, use our powers of observation and perception to try to understand the one we have. And if we are to be true to this process, then we must neither add nor detract from that which can be perceived when we provide an account of our observations. But the questions that we must address in this pursuit are not insignificant. Within the mechanical aspects of a material universe, questions of meaning and purpose seem illusory, even out of place, but their weight and significance cry out not to be ignored… we yearn to understand, to have a sense of the purpose of our being.
Inevitably, it must all come together at some point, even if that point lies outside our current level of understanding. This work, which owes so much to the efforts of countless others, is but a simple attempt to point in that direction.

A great start to find my purpose.

Most books that ponder philosophy and look deep into life and and consciousness can get very hard to understand and follow at times. But, as far as philosophy books go, this one is about as layman as it comes! It’s a deep topic that delves into the depths of reality and all that makes up reality. It asks the hard questions and does a phenomenal job of answering those questions. The author believes that all humans are put on earth for a reason. The book encourages the reader to look deeply into their own lives and find that purpose behind the materialistic life that we all can become hostage to. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more philosophical musing from this author again. It’s up to each of us to find our own purpose individually. I think this book could help set people on the right track to do just that.

This philosophical book delves deep into the subject of reality and the quest to make sense of life. Rather than telling you not to care about your reality, the message that the author conveys is that human life has a purpose. Melo addresses several questions about the culture today. The philosophical inquiries laid down by Melo will have you pondering deep into the meaning of your own life in relation to everything else in the world.

Melo puts into perspective the importance of consciousness in the material world. Despite being a philosophical book, the language used by the author is straightforward making it easy to read and understand complex philosophical aspects. The book can be a very powerful tool in the quest toward finding a purpose in the world. However, you will not enjoy this book if you are seeking merely to be entertained.

I really like to think about philosophical things: about being, about matter and so on. This book was as a motivator for me to start thinking about the meaning and the philosophy of life and not only. The author discusses issues such as God, faith, death, how it all exists in the material world. I liked the author's interpretation, it was not difficult to read, which made reading even more interesting. I believe that the author has done a great and difficult job in studying this unusual topic. Despite the complexity of this topic, it was interesting for me to read. Now I have a wish to learn more about what I learnt there. I advise everyone to read “Departure From Indifference” because I appreciate books that make you think, so this book will do it with you for sure. If you want to have fun then it’s not for you.

Departure From Indifference takes a look at the nature of our reality and how that affects us as humans. The fact that we cannot choose the world that we were born into has been a cornerstone of philosophical works since the begining and Octavio A. Melo does a fantastic job laying out his views on this subject. He covers a variety of topics in this book such as religion and death. This book was written well and Melo’s own voice comes out and kept me engaged and wanting to read more. Melo does a fantastic job at making his readers think critically about their lives and place in this reality. I will be looking into more books by Melo, very enjoyable and interesting read.

Author Octavio A Melo is both a philosopher and a teacher. His initial book was CONSCIOUSNESS RISING: Observations on the Human Experience and the Question of What Has Greatest Value, and now he offers DEPARTURE FROM INDIFFERENCE: Probing the Framework of Reality. His insight and wisdom are as impressive as his ability to communicate his concepts.

Opening his book, Octavio states ‘Matter exists…the material world exists, along with its qualities and characteristics (time, space, energy, gravity, particles and so forth)…a deeper question…is if there is anything beyond matter.’ And progressing through this short but meaningful exploration of how we understand reality, he shares his thoughts on how we come to understand and have a sense of the purpose of our being in this universe. ‘This work is an attempt to explore [meaning and purpose] with the only requirements being a willingness to reflect on these matters and an openness to venturing beyond the boundaries set by convention.’

The discussion of the differences between external and internal feelings addresses experience versus felling and the impact of timeframes on these sensations. ‘Any experience, from within the entirety of all possible experiences, no matter how significant or trivial, can only affect you in one of two ways; either how you feel about it, or how you feel about and within yourself, in regards to your actions in regards to you actions in those circumstances.’

The words were laid down perfectly, the pace of the book was steadily built to pass across its message in a way that anyone can understand. Octavio A Melo really made it obvious that we don't get to choose the reality we want - no matter how badly we want it.
