The written part of the book presents a comprehensive overview of what depression is and how brain chemicals like norepinephrine affect depression. The explanations are clear and research-based but not overly technical and give anyone who wants to understand the chemical roots of the disorder a thorough summary. It then talks about the concept of Brain Switching, and how it can be used to overcome depression, bipolar and anxiety without drugs. And it presents other holistic techniques for treating depression. But what is truly unique about this book is that, embedded right in the Kindle version, are multi-media units. I had never seen a book formatted like this before, and I found it incredibly helpful to have the multi-media right there in my reader.
There are about 15 affirmations that you just click on, and which present words accompanied by music and images on a given topic. Some of the topics are optimism, forgiveness, goals and living in the present. Throughout the guide, the multimedia unit is referenced, so you know when and how to use it. The affirmations are supposed to be used several times a day, and each takes only a few minutes, so starting with this program is not a huge commitment of time and didn't disrupt my schedule. I found myself feeling calmer after the very first one I watched...I don't know if it was the music or the images or the words or the combination, but they really did help me.
Also included are other ways to treat depression without drugs, including sleep, exercise habits and the effect of substance use on depression. I have only just started using the program but I like it and have felt the benefits already. I would recommend it to anyone interested in holistic medicine, alternative treatments and ways to treat your depression or bipolar disorder without drugs.
The author, Jesse W. Love, is obviously well-educated on this topic. The book leaves no stone un-turned. I even liked the fact that "gratitude" was mentioned as well as "forgiveness." These are two things that are important to me as a reader because I know the importance of both and how they relate to depression.
In a world where a pill is the answer to most of our health problems, it is nice to have this invaluable book - a tool - to help provide guidance, tips, and practical advice to help others get out of this deep, dark hole that we call depression. Start living Depression Free! This book will prove to help many!
Depression Free changed how I think about my own condition and gave some new avenues for empowerment. Sure, there's nothing new about the benefits of exercise, but in the context of the data given by the authors and the fresh perspective on how thoughts and actions effect emotional states, I have already started feeling the effects. I'm also grateful for the resources shared by the authors. Each chapter ends with suggestions for further readings and the book closes with a veritable library of books to read next. This is invaluable.
Above all, this book and the techniques taught within are just the beginning. The multimedia component is unbelievable. You get a link to a special website and a password that gives you over a dozen video "brainswitching" trainings. They have pleasant music, images and messages that literally rewire negative thinking channels so that you think positively instead. The authors are clearly very serious about making sure that their readers actually do take the ideas in the book and implement them by providing this resource. I hope that this source of resource is the future of publishing because it is fantastic to have more than just the book to develop the techniques from.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone struggling with depression, bipolar disorder or just has the need to sleep better, feel better and overcome negative thinking.
If you use the methods laid out for you in this book you will see the changes you have been looking for when it comes to your levels of happiness. It makes it a lot easier to self treat and overcome depression.
I highly recommend it.
