"Depression and your Child" is an exceptional book and has important value not only for parents and caregivers, but for the professional community as well. This text represents an especially important contribution: for so long depression was not considered as having diagnostic significance for infancy, childhood and adolescent disorders, even as reflected in the DSM-IV classification, despite the works of many early researchers highlighting the existence of depression from infancy onward.
Dr. Serani guides the reader through defining, diagnosing, and treating childhood depression, and deepens our understanding of this debilitating affective disorder. There is much illumination provided as Dr. Serani addresses many facets of how depression affects the child socially, cognitively, and interpersonally, and how it impacts upon both the familial and school environments. As in "Living with Depression," Dr. Serani's courageous personal journey adds much to the text, culminating in the "Case of Deborah," which highlights what can occur when depression is addressed and meaningful treatment occurs.
Dr. Deborah Serani has written a second major work and I highly recommend this thoughtful and practical book.
