From the Author
I wrote "Depth of Focus: The Stanzas" after "Depth of Focus: A Novel." Both books are adaptations of an original script I wrote several years ago. The story follows a young woman's journey across state borders, relationships and emotions she'd hoped she'd dismissed years before. But, Danni's life is complicated -- and sometimes made better -- by the people who seem to be tearing her in different directions on a daily basis.
Family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors, a roommate, former lovers and the man she's trying not to fall in love with vie for her attention while she's trying to save up money to go to school until she's nearly ready to run for the exit. Drama, comedy, romance, sibling rivalry, alienation, miscommunication, secrets, lies, the truth, love and heartbreak are all just part of the roller coaster as Danni goes for (and adjusts) her dream.
I have a poetry and music background. So, it was likely only natural for me to incorporate verse into the way I told DOF. The stanzas show what was originally written in the novel -- just in the way I heard the words in my head. Now, I write both versions simultaneously. It saves me the trouble of going back later and trying to remember all those rhythms. Readers can find excerpts and short stories on my site.
From the Back Cover
FICTION/POETRY --VERSE NOVEL IN STANZAS
After years of putting her family first, Danni decides it's finally time to take care of her own wants and needs. But, leaving everyone behind to follow her dreams in a new city presents its own set of challenges for the twenty-four-year-old aspiring photographer who didn't get to go to college when she had the chance. Without a scholarship, she's financially on her own.
As she struggles to balance a meddling roommate, nosy neighbor, former lover, current lover, mostly-absent father, jealous sibling, insecure best friend and suicidal mother with the demands of her lousy waitressing job, approaching birthday party and shrinking college fund, she realizes her dreams might not come true. Returning home a failure becomes more and more likely by the day. But, if she continues keeping everyone who cares about her at arm's length, she stands to lose a lot more than a promising career. She could lose her family and a shot at what she fears the most - falling in love.
In this verse novel -- that's also available in what looks like ordinary prose -- Depth of Focus tells the story of a young woman's quest for independence and career success. Complicated by relationships that pull her in different directions, that path leads Danni to an awakening she never expected -- and isn't quite sure she wants. Plans can change. But, Danni wonders... can people?
