Create a Wide Range of Exciting Effects, from Bold to Soft, Subtle Expressions
Derwent watercolor pencils are versatile and professional artist-quality, watersoluble pencils that create a wide range of exciting effects, from bold, vibrant images to soft, subtle impressions. Combining the control of a pencil with the beauty of traditional watercolors, their high pigment content offers exceptional color blend, wet or dry.
Create intense color by applying a dry pencil over wet washes. Make sure you use a blunt tip to avoid surface damage. To produce texture or mottling, scrape flakes from the tip of the pencil with a craft knife, or rub the tip over a sandpaper block, allowing settling and dissolving on a wet area of the paper. Alternatively, flick color off the tip of the pencil with a wet toothbrush. Blend color and create washes by dragging a natural sponge or wet cloth over dry marks. Make sure that you regularly clean the pencil tip by scribbling on dry paper to minimize color contamination.
The pencils are pre-sharpened for immediate use and a color-dipped end offers easy color identification. An ideal gift for the budding art student or the artist in you.

I think they work especially well for multimedia projects; it's very easy to get color exactly where you want it, and you can get a "watercolor" appearance without having to own a really fancy watercolor set or spend a great deal of time doing watercolors. It is still easy to blend colors, so you're not restricted to these 12 colors.
At church I teach a class of children and last year I had the 6 year-old kids. We did a multimedia project where I had them coloring with different sorts of things and using glue to affix tissue paper and so forth. I had them use these watercolor pencils to color one particular part to give it a special dream-like effect. They loved it! I don't think I really could have brought paints and a bunch of water and paintbrushes because they were all in church clothes...but it was very easy to have them color their stuff and then pass out pre-moistened Q-tips for them to wet the watercolor part and create the watercolor effect. It really added something, and was a fun change from using crayons like we normally do.
I personally enjoy using these to make small drawings which I first draw in pencil, paint using these watercolor pencils, and then after the painting is dry I go back and use a black pigma pen to trace my pencil lines. It creates a sort of illustration that frees up loose emotions, despite the fact that I am not extremely artistic.
Anyhow, in summary, these pencils are great! The lead is not too hard or too soft. They sharpen well. Once you've drawn something, adding water causes the color to behave like watercolor, instead of only sticking to the place you've drawn. The colors are vibrant. These work great for adults and children alike, and they are a great addition to an art box. The tin is fantastic for keeping everything together (unlike crayon and marker boxes that tend to get crushed or rip, etc.). I highly recommend these as a gift for an artistic young person, or for anyone interested in a new medium that is not overly complicated.
