The day of her birthday, Jessie discovers that she is a descendent of the first ever immortal human race—those who drank from the Fountain of Youth millennia ago and unleashed mortality into the world. Like the rest of her family, she will live forever. But there is a cost. The Fountain of Youth must replenish its lifegiving stores. And to do that, it turns those who’ve benefited from its waters into killers—demanding blood for the eternal life it grants.
Jessie can’t believe it—she’s not a killer. Only…she can already feel new dark impulses building inside her.
In defense, she turns her back on her old life and starts training with Tyler, another (cute) immortal descendant of those cursed waters. She learns ways to tame the water’s bloodthirsty voice, channeling her murderous impulses toward more…productive use of her killer instincts.
To make things worse, someone else out there knows about her secret—and wants to stop her …permanently.
But even more terrifying is what could happen to those she loves if the waters ever gets the best of her…

About the author

CS Kendall first sparked an interest in writing in the third grade and has been toying with various story ideas since.
Finally, a few years ago she decided to put pen to paper and really give it a go. The Killing Cure Series is her debut work.
In her day job she feels honored to serve as a therapist in a private practice setting where she is daily inspired by the stories of struggle, courage. and overcoming her clients entrust to her. Walking through the difficulties of depression, anxiety and major life transitions is a privilege she feels humbled to be a part of. She incorporates themes she sees in her work, of humanity warring with aspiration to be better, of suffering and triumphing. She believes it truly is the story of humanity, those common experiences and struggles--sometimes endured in silent desperation--that connect us all. And she loves to find creative ways to convey that to her readership.
CS lives happily with her family in southwest Michigan.

I read and enjoyed the Killing Cure trilogy, and the premise of that trilogy and this new series is really intriguing. Through all these books, the water of the fountain of youth is skillfully developed as a dangerous and alluring character that interacts with the humans it possesses and those around them.
Jessie’s emotional development through the book is one of the gems of this story. She is wrestling with many normal teenage emotions and dramas, but suddenly with a new layer of learning she is immortal. And not only immortal, immortal with a specific burden of murderous water inside her.
I as the reader struggled with Jessie, wanting her to fight the murderous water as much as she wanted to fight it. But it raises good human questions for us - when do we fight impulses and when do we submit to them? I think there would be some great discussion in a book club about some of these themes.
All good books, fiction and non-fiction, lead us to ask important questions. This one certainly did. For another example, the “villain” in this story was the victim of tragic circumstances (ie abandonment and abuse as a child) that led him to do terrible things. The protagonist was the victim of tragic circumstances (ie family curse) that led her to do terrible things. Does one deserve to die more than the other?
Perhaps I’m looking a little too deep here - mostly I really enjoyed the entertainment value of a well-woven page turner! I look forward to meeting more descendants of the curse through future books in this series.
Full disclosure - I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a review, but I was not compensated and these are my honest opinions and reflections. I also purchased the book after because it was worth it.
Jessie Mason is a normal teenaged girl who loves musical theater. "I was really getting to like this person." All of that changes on her 17th birthday, when she finds out that she is a descendant of a group of people who drank from the Fountain of Youth many, many years ago. In order to maintain her immortal life, she must answer to The Waters that demand she kill someone once a month. "The waters required life power in order to continue to grant eternal life."
Her assignments are given to her by The Community and for the past seven months, they have been lowlife people who have caused great harm and death to others. So, Jessie doesn't feel so bad in taking their lives and making the world a better place. "I'm happy as long as I know and can fulfill what is expected of me."
But, things start to get complicated for Jessie when the head of The Community, Florence Molly, gives her the latest assignment. Jessie is supposed to kill a man named Linus Filch, who is suspected of abducting and killing two young girls. When Jessie meets Filch, she finds a man who is a loner and not a nice person, but she doesn't get the usual creepy vibe that surrounds her previous assignments. "Never quiet that voice within. It speaks loud and it speaks true."
While Jessie tries to decide if Filch deserves to die, her boyfriend's ex shows up. As if that weren't enough, her younger sister, Cora, is spending a lot of time with a substitute teacher who sets Jessie's radar off. Although Mr. Samson is handsome and all the young girls love him, Jessie feels like something isn't right about him. "When faced with a suspicion about another person, even when it doesn't make sense, I'm usually right."
Jessie's best friend, Addy, is a descendant of a group who are determined to kill all of the Community. In this book, Addy's story grows and she has a much bigger part in this series. She starts to discover things about her dead parents and the Group that lead to her having to make a choice about whom to believe. "Don't you dare use my dead parents to guilt me into doing what you want."
This book is all about choices and being true to yourself, in spite of what the world around you is trying to force you to do. There is a bit of romance as Jessie and Tyler's relationship starts to grow, enough action and intrigue to keep you guessing and enough of an ending to satisfy those who hate cliffhangers. I would recommend that you read the first book in the series in order to fully understand this one.
The characters are well-developed and constantly growing and I have come to enjoy being pulled into their world. The story is well-written and I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.
And to sum it up in one quote: "Afterall, even immortal serial killers need to know someone has their back."
