Readers look for four things in the books that they read for pleasure....
Don't tell your readers what they are seeing, show them what they are seeing.
Description is one of the ways how you, the writer, van accomplish that task.
As with all aspects of writing, it is not easy, but the more you sit down and
write the better you will become.
Use this book as another tool in your writers tool box.
Before reviewing the content of the book, I want to say that the prose had a pleasing rhythm and that I don’t believe I found any typos. Perhaps most readers don’t care that much about prose rhythm, but it’s important to me as it enhances my enjoyment of books!
The parts of Description I enjoyed most were the ones on the senses of taste and touch, partly because these two, especially touch, are my favorite of the five senses.
There were many insights and tips in this book, with some good examples to illustrate Marcy’s points. However, I think there could have been even more examples drawn from novels and included as quoted passages, not just quick mentions of what the authors did. I know that Marcy wants to keep her book short, but for me personally, I like seeing many quoted passages because they make points much easier to remember and understand on an emotional level, as opposed to only on an intellectual and abstract level.
But overall, this was a nice read and will be helpful to me as description is one of my main weaknesses in writing.
