Editorial Reviews

"Desert Bound is the second exciting entry featuring clashing cultures, romance, and murder. Hunter's gifts as a storyteller are on full display!" ★ ★ ★ ★ --RT Magazine
"Elizabeth Hunter is a paranormal writing genius. She takes unique themes and elements and creates a world that I never want to escape! I have read few shape shifting books that I truly enjoyed (for some reason the theme has never been well written when I try to dive in), yet this series has raised the standard to the highest level and I will never be able to go back!"
--Typical Distractions
"[Desert Bound] is a great story, fabulous setting, a range of shifters from birds to wolves and cats to snakes...and each have their own part to play."
--Jeanie Zelos
"This book is just another example of Hunter's ability to provide a story with amazing depth and living characters. I cannot wait to read more about the inhabitants of Cambio Springs."
--Colleen Vanderlinden, author of the HIDDEN series

One consistent thing I've noticed in Hunter's writing that sets her apart from her contemporaries, is her ability to make setting a living, breathing, almost tangible element of her stories. We were first introduced to Cambio Springs in book one, Shifting Dreams. Now in book two, Hunter takes us back to a desert town with a secret, making us all wish we could load into the car and drive out there today.

Ted, a complex, feisty, prominent member of the cat shifters, isn't about to just fall for Alex McCann's trick again. She's been there, done that, and doesn't believe he'll stick around in Cambio Springs any longer than he has to. She isn't the only one whose teeth are flashed when the alpha heir apparent in the wolf clan comes traipsing back into town. Neither Alex nor Ted's family are keen on the two of them being involved, worrying it will cause a shift in the balance of power between the clans.

Alex has two missions, the results of which are in his mind inextirpably tied: completing the building of a resort spa on the edge of town, and winning back the heart of the woman he loves. When one of the town's native sons and project managers is found murdered at the build site, a mystery of who and why unfolds, forcing the site boss, Alex, and the town's doctor and default coroner, Ted, to work closely to unravel the mystery. What they discover about the murder and about each other will alter the course of their lives and Cambio Springs forever.

As usual, Hunter excels at not just crafting a romance with plenty of heat, but with a finely-tuned sense of intimacy between the lovers. Every touch, every embrace between Alex and Ted courses with raw, powerful, simultaneously restorative and destructive emotions. Love scenes are true to their title.

This is Alex and Ted's story in the Cambio Springs series. The construction on the new resort, which is supposed to revitalize Cambio Springs, is underway when murder happens once again. Alex and Ted try to work out their issues from the past while trying to catch the murderer.

Although I enjoyed this story, it was definitely nowhere near as good as Jena and Caleb's story (Shifting Dreams). I think mainly because the issues between Alex and Ted that broke them apart and kept them apart for all of those years seemed really trivial to me. I feel that the author also struggled throughout the book to develop enough conflict for the protagonists to deal with in order to keep the story interesting, falling back on family disapproval and romantic jealousies. The ending was anticlimactic as the reader can basically guess what will happen.

Ms. Hunter is a talented writer and I enjoy her stories a lot. I wasn't particularly impressed with this one, but the author had me hooked on this series with A Long Ride Home so I will definitely continue reading.

This review is kinda lame I think because the main romance was kind of a mystery and the murder mystery was the second main part of the plot and I can't say much or I give something away. Loved it as a reader, as a reviewer it is kinda hard to review :)

This was a great story, the love match for this story of Alex and Ted (it is her nickname) was not an easy one since they seemed to love to fight with each other.

There is a murder to be solved in the midst of all this and as usual it is a great "whodunnit".

This book is all about the characters in Cabio Springs and their interactions and it was great and the setup for the next book is equally enthralling and hope we don't have to wait too long for it.

Bottom Line: It was great, lots I can't say in a review especially since there is a mystery to solve but this is top notch stuff here folks. 5 Stars and highly recommended

Elizabeth Hunter has an amazing gift to weave an interesting story that is intricate and highly multifaceted. For me, Desert Bound was no different in that regard. Desert Bound focuses centrally on Alex McCann and Teodora ‘Ted’ Vasquez (who you can find out more about in their introduction in Five Mornings: A Cambio Springs Short Story.

Alex and Ted had more than a contentious relationship. They went from a young love that grew to much more to near enemies after Ted feels betrayed and abandoned by Alex for pursuing his career over her. Ted returns to their home to begin her medical practice while Alex is living the life of a business mogul in Los Angeles. But things aren't always as they appear on the surface. Alex has never stopped loving Ted and his return to Cambio Springs is more than just a business venture. He wants to win back his girl. But Ted isn't making things easy for Alex; however fate sends a little nudge in the couple's favor but causing situations that throw them together. A lot of siuatioms, too.

Desert Bound is definitely rife with mystery and suspense and there is a lot going on with secondary and tertiary characters that you don't want to miss. I love how Hunter connected the threads of this story into a vividly intriguing tapestry that kept the reader fully engaged in wanting to know what would happen next.

The epilogue beautifully sets the stage for Waking Hearts, Ollie and Allie's journey to a happily ever after.
