"Desert Island" is Cusco's first album. As the title suggests, this album has an island or coastal theme. It is an instrumental (no lyrics) journey around the world. This album, like most of Cusco's music, is relaxing. My definition of "relaxing" music is that it must have good flow and harmony with enough complexities and changes to hold my interest. Boring or irritating music does not relax me. While much of their music is considered "New Instrumental", it stimulates my imagination much like Classical music.

I bought the European edition of this album a few years ago. At that time much of Cusco's early music was never released in the USA. I am glad that all their music is now available for purchase in the USA as mp3 downloads!

A note for new listeners: Cusco was started in Germany by musicians Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze and features other talented musicians. Cusco's early music was well received in Japan, but it was not until their album "Apurimac" that Cusco made its U.S. debut. The theme of much of their music is a mix of geography, culture, history, and fantasy. They have also released an album of Classical music (played in Cusco's unique style) titled "Concierto De Aranjuez" and a beautiful Christmas album titled "A Choral Christmas." The music group was named after Cusco (or Cuzco), the ancient capital city of Peru.

For those who are more familiar with Cusco's later work and their American releases, this album might be a bit of a shock. The sound is somewhat different and has a bit more of an electronic feel to it. Still there is no mistaking the essence of Cusco behind it all. Again, fans familiar with the American releases will be pleased to find earlier versions of some familiar tracks. I found it a very enjoyable look at the early beginnings of this wonderful group. The album will not disappoint with a mix of upbeat as well as soothing and mellow tracks. Certainly a great buy for any fan of Cusco or simply great new age music.

It's hard to choose a favorites of Cusco's if you hear this one and don't have the rest, you'll want them eventually .the four islands,Mystic,Virgin and Cool are all excellent and just like the Apurimac Trilogy if you visit one you'll want to visit the rest.
