Desert Skies, Rebel Souls is a beautiful, emotional, and breathtaking story of love, adventure, and self-discovery. Olivia is leaving her home in Scandinavia for an adventure in the Middle East. Little does she know that this trip will take her on a journey that will completely change the direction of her life.
Olivia craves freedom from her family and first love, Daniel. She wants to explore the world, and she thinks this trip will do both for her. Not long after arriving, she meets Chaim, an Israeli, who is awaiting his orders to join the army. Through him, her eyes will be opened in ways she never imagined. She experiences adventure and danger. Little things that mattered to her like her grades, exams, which university to attend will seem like small things as she experiences the dangers of the Middle East.
As she and Chaim fall in love, they have to find a way for their love to survive. He is committed to the army, and she will have to return home. Their love will be put to the test in every imaginable way. Olivia becomes a different person just in the time she has spent away from her family. She isn’t sure where she fits in anymore. She will have to search within herself to determine the person she is meant to be and the direction her life will take.
I have never read anything by M.P. Tonnesen before, but I’m glad I discovered her. Desert Skies, Rebel Souls is well-written. Her characters come to life, and she writes in a way that made me become a part of the story. I felt like I was with Olivia every step of the way on her journey of self-discovery. While the story doesn’t end in a cliffhanger, I do hope we get to see more of these star-crossed lovers. It seems like they have many more adventures to explore.

Though both are young, they feel an immediate connection, one that remains strong during his first months of training and her further travels around Egypt and the Jordan, where she explores the sights and learns more about the region’s turbulent history.
Via Olivia, we visit many places and experience cultures most Westerners haven’t. The author’s excellent descriptions of the archeological sites, holy temples, crowded cities and crazy border crossings of all three countries are fascinating and enhance the story.
When an accident threatens Chaim’s life, their budding romance is severely tested. She returns to Israel where they discover how deep their love for each other really is.
This is an enjoyable romance set in a fascinating region of the world. The author’s easy to read style pulls you in and keeps you captivated until the satisfying end.

Four reasons you should read Desert Skies, Rebel Souls:
1. You will learn so much about Israeli culture! I have been trying to read more books that center around cultures different from my own, and this book is all that and a bag of chips in that department. Tonnesen's descriptions and explanations of the places, history, and culture of Israel truly kept me coming back for more. If you wish to be more culturally aware -- if you are a wanderlust -- I definitely suggest this book.
2. The eighteen-year-old protagonist, Olivia, is a relatable character coming onto the scene with the perfect mixture of experience and naivete necessary for a good coming-of-age story. She just wants to escape the confines of her family life in Copenhagen by volunteering in Israel, on a kibbutz. As much adventure she finds while living in the kibbutz, she finds just as much struggle -- with who she is and where she belongs. This is especially true in light of her quickly developing love for handsome local Chaim, a young man who is preparing to serve in the Israeli Army.
3. The romance is steamy and bittersweet. Olivia and Chaim are attracted to one another from the day Olivia arrives at the kibbutz. But after such a short duration, does their relationship have what it takes to make it through anything? Is romance worth potentially losing a part of who you are?
4. The '90s musical references. Who doesn't love "Barbie Girl" and "Mr. Jones"?!
I liked Desert Skies, Rebel Souls. I appreciate all of the amazing work Michelle Tonnesen put into it, especially the Israeli culture (and the musical nuggets). Unfortunately, though I have had whirlwind romances of my own, insta-love novels can irk me quite a bit. Not to say that I steer clear of any books which contain romance, just that I don't typically LOVE novels dedicated to romance, especially romance that takes off within the first few chapters. If you DO love romance, though, I would not be surprised at all if you find this book worth four or five stars. Desert Skies, Rebel Souls is the perfect romance with a sense of adventure.
