The setting is the empty desert, with jaunts to LA, to a ranch in Colorado, and to ancient ruins. I especially enjoyed the nice touches you don't usually get in a mystery--scents of food, a feel of bygone times in the ghost town, and romantic leads who don't necessarily fit the "hot and nubile" stereotype.
In fact, the best part of this book is that it doesn't conform to stereotypical writing. Grandy does not throw hyperactive thrills or soppy romance at the reader. Instead, she tells a riveting story with pauses to let us know the characters and catch our breath.
I think it's the perfect book to download or pack for a vacation.
I have rated this book 4 stars.
I obtained this book from Amazon in Kindle format.
It's true that the desert knows a beauty all its own, and the author Libby Grandy pays homage to it well in this story of reflections, regrets and redemption. The main character's ex-husband goes missing and a mystery must be solved as his body slowly desiccates in a cavern. Yet, this is no straightforward puzzle, and--yikes, I don't want to give away any twists--suffice it to say that I was reading furiously to get to the truth.
In the gentle side of this mystery, Grandy brings to life beautiful details of finding comfort in new friends, hopeful romances and rugged nature along with what it means to stand at the fork in life's road. I found the late life intimate scenes refreshing and tastefully told as compared to the raunchy scenes in today's novels.
The end surprised me. (No, no, I won't say more or I'll spill it!) But I will definitely buy her next novel.
Very well written. I have found a new author to read.
