A Self-study Wood Design book for an Engineer or Architect

I'm currently working through this book in a self-directed study program that I think will span about a year. I've been a licensed Civil Engineer for 40 years and am retiring soon and plan to build homes and consult in wood structures. This book is refreshing my college training in structures oriented towards steel and concrete and is introducing me to wood design. Its fulfilling my needs exceptionally well. It provides references to several critical supporting publications that will total about five not counting the IBC related publications required. For learning about the IBC itself its best to take some Community College Construction Department classes. This book would be good for any licensed Engineer or Architect with similar objectives; I'm not clear on how others will use it though. It gives you the ability to design wood framed structures without relying on the prescriptive elements of the IBC so your own design creativitiy scope is greatly enhanced and your ability to support other's designs increases. Each chapter has exercise problems, but there aren't answers provided so maybe the Authors could make them available online someday.

Great wood structure textbook

This book was required for a masters degree wood engineering course I took. The book is great and really helps you understand issues specific to wood design, and to understand how to use the NDS wood code. My only complaint is that the examples worked in the book skip through a lot of the calculations, which is pretty common in many advanced textbooks, but this one doesn't always explain what it skipped. Overall though, this is probably one of the better wood design texts out there.

This is a very highly rated book but I couldn't resist the urge to put in my two cents. I could go on about why I like this book but I'll cut straight to the chase. If you are a Civil/Structural engineer or student you NEED this book. This book is a must have for students and practicing engineers. If you already read this book, BUY this edition because it has IBC 2006, ACSE 7-05, and LRFD. Don't let the 'Wood' in the title make you think you don't need it. Structural analysis using current codes is very well written and will be helpful for all aspects of structural engineering.

This is a great starting reference for wood design! It was recommended to me by a coworker and a teacher. It is great for the workplace and for school. Breyer does a good job of explaining almost everything in clear detail.

One thing I thought was odd about this book was the use of Method 1 for determining wind loads instead of the more common analytical method. I guess even book writer like to take the easy way out sometimes. :)

Also, Breyer tends to go back and forth design glulam and sawn lumber members intermittently through the chapters. I don't quite mind, but I know that it has annoyed others that have used it the book that I know.

Fairly Comprehensive of BASICS, however sorely lacking in good examples.

This book is the required textbook for my timber design course in college, and it does indeed provide the basics needed to address the design of simple structures. The only issue with the book is that the examples cover only the basics with its examples. Anyone who has ever actually done real design would be able to do the example problems from scratch by just looking through the NDS for a few minutes. In order to make this book truly useful, it needs to incorporate examples that are comparable to real world problems, like how to design an eccentrically loaded bolt group, something very common in heavy truss connections. Furthermore, not a single equation is numbered or labeled in any way which make the examples fairly difficult to follow if you don't already know the code (ASCE 7-05) fairly well.

My point is this:

Yes, this is a good book, but come on people it's not that great, a modest 3 star review is the best I can give this book.
