How To Use This Toolkit If you can recognize a well-designed garden but need some basic skills to start building your own garden beds in interesting and beautiful ways, here's the tool you need to get started. Read up on the fundamentals of good garden design (it's not as hard as you might think), learn a simple method for creating your own design, and browse a selection of 78 reliable plants that you can find in almost any good garden center in a temperate climate. Sure, you might find newer varieties out there, but these are classics. There are a few shrubs, lots of perennials, and a handful of plants that won't be hardy in most gardens but are worth the effort to bring indoors each winter or worth the money to buy new each spring.
Once you've studied the basics of combining plants and browsed through the possibilities, use the stickers and the fold-out design board to create the garden(s) of your dreams. We've included different cultivars for a number of plants and multiples of many of the stickers, because sometimes you need more than one. The design board has a grid on one side and an empty garden plot on the other, to suit your working style. The stickers are proportional to each other, based on the final growth habit, but do keep in mind that plants grow! You'll need to take that into account when you actually start digging.

    This is a terrific book. It is informative, and "hands on". After 30 minutes with the book I am already generating new ideas for planting (we have a big job to do along a long fence). The use of the reusable stickers to conceptualize different plant combinations is extremely useful. I am also seeing some plants for the first time. What is amazing is that the stickers contain not only an image of the plant, but also a guide regarding the amount of sun/shade needed.

    I noticed in another review that someone mentioned the stickers having a strong smell. I was somewhat concerned about this because I am very sensitive to chemical odors. Fortunately, this is not an issue! If I put the stickers right up to my nose, I can smell a plastic odor, but I am not at all overwhelmed by off-gassing from the stickers and I have been sitting next to them spread out on a table for over an hour.

    As a side note, but relevant for those of you with little gardeners, my 8 year old was immediately attracted to the book and the stickers and has designed a garden already.

    I wanted to give this book 2 stars but then thought that it is not quite fair since people who just started gardening would appreciate step by step guide of the Perfect Plant Combinations, colors and fundamental principles of positioning the plants. But if you a person who gardens for some time and look for design inspirations and wants to acquire some knowledge on how to design then this book is not for you. It is not really helpful in terms of design and plant layout since the number of varieties of the plants in the book is very limited. It says in the description that: "you'll have everything you need to create your vision of the perfect garden", but they do not mention in the book the importance of hardscape, foundation trees, evergreen trees, light, soil structure, etc. which are so important when beginning a garden. This book-and-kit is a waste of money, do not buy it unless you see the dirt first time in your life.

    I know my way around my vegetable garden, mostly from years of trial and error. This year, we replaced an old wood deck with a paver patio and retaining wall and guess what still needs to be done. Yes, indeed, the landscaping and planting plan and I am a total novice in that area. This book provided everything I could want to create interesting plant arrangements and more importantly, will save me from having to dig up and move plants because I misjudged height or width. The descriptions told me if the plant suggested in this book was appropriate for my zone, the light requirement and how tall and wide the plant could grow. The author shares 'The Keys to a Beautiful Garden' through the use of harmony and contrast, color, texture, form and focal points. There is so much great information given even before the ‘Meet the Plants' section. Next summer, I'll not only be enjoying my DIY patio but a beautifully landscaped area too!

    This was pretty hard to find on the search for some reason. Anyway, it is actually one of the best books I have found in garden design - i have lots and this is the one that actually explains and demystifies how to combine plants. There are enough plants in the sticker section to have a play and get the hang of the combining lark. It's American, but you don't notice much - uses plants very common in the UK.
