DESIGNA is packed with examples from thousands of years: Graphics and Architectural styles from around the world as well as Scientific examples of ideas like symmetry and repetitive examples from Nature. All sorts of patterns, from strict order to random fields. An arcane tour of relationships compiled for those who can take advantage of this information and not have to reinvent the wheel. It's fascinating reading, and going through the illustrations there are Artistic designs you may have seen (for example in works by M.C. Escher) that are broken down into their elements to show how they work, both visually to massage the brain through the optical cortex, and aesthetically, as they show you WHY they are beautiful. You could view this as someone seeking a specific solution to a problem or as a tourist who just wants to explore where they've never been before. There are carved pieces from 200,000 years ago that are just as modern-looking as Art made yesterday, using the same designs for the same reasons, proving that early humans were more like we are now (and maybe even more, because considering the difficultly level of those pieces, the nameless creators were geniuses.)
I wasn't quite sure what this book would contain and now I'm pleased (and amazed) at the depth and scale of the resources that were assembled to inform as well as entertain.
Brief introductions of uses in history make this book not only a great collection of patterns but a delightful history book.
The Golden Section chapter is great.
This series of books is downright amazing, they have all the secrets to everything you ever really wanted to know about design, I also have Quadrivium and its everything you ever could want to know about qualitative math, math in art, math in music and math in nature.
I can’t imagine my life without these and I plan to enjoy them for ever

The content is great. Like other reviewers, I find that this little book is packed with interesting, inspiring information that are presented in a compelling and accessible manner. I also like the general layout and the small size of this book as it makes it easy to keep it around and dip in and out if and when needed.
What is disappointing here is the poor quality of print. Each section of the book is printed in a different mono-colour which often enough not only looks ugly (Book II in particular - printed in what I call 'poop brown'), but more importantly lacks depth, sharpness and richness so needed when presenting intricate geometric patterns. It would have been better if all the sections where simply in b&w, but even the pages that are fail to appear as crisp as they could and should be. As a result, it's quite difficult to see the details properly, and this isn't helped by the small size of the book either. It all look as if someone had printed this book on an affordable home printer with quick eco mode selected - a bit washed out, a bit bland, with badly adjusted contrast - one can almost see the whiteness of the paper coming up from beneath the ultra-thin layer of ink. The paper itself also isn't great and reminds me very much of school text-books intended for one or two years of use only. I suppose this is quite common in cheaply produced books of the 21st century, but it's particularly sad when it happens in a book that treats about art and design.
Wooden Books, you can do so much better than this. Your books are so inspiring and interesting. It's time to make them beautiful, too.
This book is nice to have, but not what I was expecting. It’s more of a jumping off point to teach you what to learn about, than any kind of lesson or teaching in itself — if that makes sense. It tells you the names and history of tools, techniques and methods used, but doesn’t tell you how to actually implement them.
Also the illustrations — though very nicely drawn, as you’d imagine — aren’t done much justice with the colour scheme, printing or size.
I’d say I’m mildly disappointed but it will stay on my bookshelf as a kind of glossary, almost, to look up what styles and patterns that I come across are called, where they originate from and similar. Then I can look for actual ‘how to’ resources using the right terms. That’s probably the value of this book — don’t buy it as an instructional.
Definitely a book I'd treasure for the years to come. Love love love it
But packaging could have been better, slightly damaged the spine
