*“Contemporary crocheters will be delighted and grateful to have Mullett-Bowlsby’s guide to creating drapey, stylish garments without any of the bulk so often associated with their medium. All the garments in the book are sized from small to 5X, with detailed instructions to help change sizes. Standout projects include the beginner-friendly, bell-sleeved three-quarter-sleeve pullover and the red ‘Beginner Cardi,’ created easily from six rectangles. The Three-Quarter Sleeve Cardi is a covetable design for intermediate crocheters, as is a turtleneck poncho with easy shaping and fancy color work. Advanced crocheters can show off higher-level skills (cables and lace) with a demure tunic or the challenging Motif Maxi Skirt. Most of the yarn is fingering weight, superfine, or fine, producing a finished garment that lightly hugs the body. Plenty of thought is given to the yarns, so crocheters will probably want to use the recommended fiber for each project. A final section on special techniques and finishing instructions rounds out this beautifully photographed book.” —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)
“Mullett-Bowlsby is definitely a needlework designer to watch. Even though he claims 200 published patterns, this book will jumpstart his claim to crocheting fame. Why the acclaim? First, the 32 patterns, all classic, are created with subtle twists. Hoodies, for example, come sleeveless or long, with cloak-type head coverings or more streamlined shapes. Second, the sizing. Mullett-Bowlsby’s not only been more than generous in including up to (and usually beyond) 2X, his instructions also allow for a shaping and a more precise fit, no matter what the actual number. Third, he’s not at all shy about sharing his techniques: specific foundation stitches, best seaming methods, and zipper shortening and sewing are all found in the last chapter. Finally, instructions and photographs give book-chapter-verse-sentence to every design. There are guides for pattern stitches and special techniques, schematics, stitch charts, and, always, full-color photographs of the finished apparel and stitch close-ups.” —Booklist

The designs in the book vary in difficulty from basic to advanced, with the majority falling into the intermediate range. The book also features a variety of models with different body types, and most of the garments would be great for the full-figured woman. The patterns also make use of several different yarns in various weights, fibers, and price points, so if you are interested in crocheting from your stash there is bound to be something in here you could make with what you already have.
As a side note, for those who are new to crochet cable construction (which is used a few of the designs in this book), I also highly recommend Shannon's Craftsy class, "Quick and Easy Crochet Cables". He's a great instructor, plus he's just fun to listen to.
Still better, virtually all of the designs are given in a multitude of sizes, from very small to 5x. There’s a size for virtually everyone. It’s nice to see sizes most designers can’t be bothered with. Several of the items are even shown on plus-size models. That is so rare in crochet and knit patterns.
Irrelevant rant number one: I’ve purchased quite a few crochet patterns, magazines and books, only to find the patterns were limited to only a few sizes (Interweave, I mean you).
Irrelevant rant number two: A pattern for a crochet button-down top that I purchased from a different company recently had the audacity to create “sizes” by having one side of the front be one size (extra small), and the other side, crocheted in vertical rows, to be made larger by just adding more rows. The result was for a large-busted woman, the top buttoned straight down, not down the center, but rather awkwardly to the side over a particular portion of her chest, not where one normally places buttons.
End of rants.
The designer, Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby, is to be congratulated for his useful and attractive designs. In the book, he also mentions referring to his website to see additional views of his designs. Visiting his site, I was surprised to see how many of his previous designs I was not only familiar with, but had purchased, never knowing the name of the designer.
In addition to the patterns, there is also an unusually good instructional section on techniques.

I have only tried the cowlette pattern and it does not make any sense. By following the pattern, you're adding 2-4 stitches on each row, which means you'd end up with a very lopsided garment with one short end and one massive end - not like the picture shown at all. I've tried to compensate by removing the first couple of stitches at each end, but following the pattern still adds extra stitches along the way.
Very disappointed as the images looked beautiful in the book. The authors should add video tutorials to compensate for the errors in their patterns.
This is a book that will be well used and not left on a shelf to gather dust. Hooded cardis , tunics, dresses, vests it's got the lot and all with stunning photos of each design. Buy it it's worth every penny.
