Flavor Name: Peanut Butter Crunch Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
For better or worse, I live on protein bars. I'm in the gym 4-5 days per week and have a fairly hectic schedule on top of that, so protein bars have become an easy go-to snack, whether it's post-workout or just something to get me through the afternoon. My current favorites are Quest Nutrition bars, followed by Universal Nutrition Doctor's Carbrite Diet, and VPX Bang Bars (for a meal replacement), as each utilize great ingredients with little to no filler, have exceptional nutritional profiles, and offer top-notch flavors. As such, I was excited to, perhaps, add a new bar into my rotation. But after giving these a taste and seeing the ingredients, I have to say Designer Whey Crunch bars didn't cut it for me.

First, the flavor (Peanut Butter Crunch) is far too sweet, as is evidenced by the amount of sugar packed into each bar. The peanut butter flavor itself is pretty good and the texture is really nice, with just the right amount of chewiness and crunch, but there's no reason for a health bar to have as much sugar as a Snickers Ice Cream Bar. Many companies are opting to use natural sweeteners, such as Stevia, these days, so it's surprising to see Designer Whey still using sugar as its main sweetener.

Second, for a "protein" bar, the protein content is fairly insubstantial. When the total carbohydrates exceed total protein (in this case, TWICE as many carbs, none of which is fiber), I don't think "protein bar" is an accurate label; energy bar, snack bar, etc. are far more appropriate.

Third, while the calories are actually pretty low for a protein bar, the overall nutritional and ingredient profile is less-than-desirable.

This review is for the peanut butter crunch flavor, since several different flavors are available on the product page. I opened the package on one of these bars without being sure what to expect (the photo on the wrapper isn't really all that clear). And it *looked* like a candy bar. Tasted a bit like one too. At any rate, I thought it was delicious. I didn't find it all that crunchy, though -- it was chewy to me.

While the ingredients are in the product listing, I find the image blurry and hard to read, so I am duplicating the list here:

Whey Protein Concentrate, Soy Protein Concentrate, Soy Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Concentrate, Sugar (Flavored Coating), Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil (Flavored Coating), Partially Defatted Peanut Flour (Flavored Coating), Sodium Caseinate (Flavored Coating), Soy Lecithin (Flavored Coating), Salt (Flavored Coating), Natural Flavor (Flavored Coating), Honey, Brown Rice Syrup, Cane Syrup, Tapioca Syrup, Water, Rice Flour, Calcium Phosphate, Ascorbic Acid, Alpha Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Cyanocobalamin, Cholecalciferol, Nonfat Milk, Glycerine, Tapioca Starch, Butter, High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Cocoa, Sunflower Lecithin, Sodium Citrate, Carrageenan, Maltodextrin

If you have allergies, this is probably not for you. Whey comes from dairy, of course, but this also has soy ingredients, several other milk-based ingredients, and peanut flour. They are vegetarian but not vegan. I don't see anything specifically that contains gluten, but I don't know where the natural flavor comes from, either.

These are supplemented with a lot of vitamins and minerals.

Taste is good but there is 50% more sugar than protein, but at least its not HFCS. Plus there is soy in this, I got it because it says Whey. But if you dont care about sugar or soy then it is delicious.

These are really handy to use as a quick pick me up, or to hold you over until you can eat a meal. They taste good - not like some of the heavy mealy-textured high protein bars. I didn't think I'd be able to eat a dozen of them, but they go down easily.

Flavor Name: Peanut Butter Crunch Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I'm tired of protein bars that are SWEET SWEET SWEET first and have the flavor almost as an aftertaste. That is the case with the Designer Whey Peanut Butter Crunch Protein Bar.

It does seem to have the protein crisps in it, rather than the silly putty consistency protein you get in some bars. I really prefer the protein crisps.

However, the peanut butter taste is totally secondary to the sugar. In this case, 14 grams worth!

There is an unremarkable drizzle of brown (maybe chocolate?) over the top of it.
