Your choice is this, or spend three hundred on an actual professional grade unit. That's basically all there is to it; that's the route I went, so far after a few months, I'm happy with the purchase.
If you're looking at a 12 gauge extension cord, you probably know what you're doing or you'd have just gone the cheap route with a thirty dollar 16 gauge extension cord that will be a danger when you hook up a high amperage device. Then, like me, you started looking around at your options. Amazon has some great products for the commercial market with 12 gauge cables, metal reels, self-winding, wall mount, etc., but man, they are all hundreds of dollars and here I am just wanting something simple to run some tools occasionally.
If you go into it knowing you're basically getting a high quality 12 gauge cable on a cheap plastic reel, then you're going to be very happy with your purchase. It's not the easiest thing to roll back up onto the reel, but is that really a big deal? No. It's a cool green color that is easy to see, there's a light in the plug and on the base to let you know it's powered, you get six outlets instead of two or four like most others and it seems to take a fair amount of abuse. I'm sure over the years it won't last as long as the three hundred plus competitors, but I can buy three more of these before I'd break even, so that works for me.
UPDATED REVIEW. Unless you have a particularly strong need for this style, take a pass and just buy a 50ft tripple end tap regular extension cord. While in use, this always gets tipped over and dragged around. Not to mention the time spend to carefully wind it back up(awkward) like you found it - acts like too much line on a fishing reel. A larger reel would work better. For me, stretching out a tripple tap extension cord and being able to quickly rewind it trumps fussing around with this(Though I lose the circuit breaker benefit)
****Notice I am NOT downgrading the stars. If this is what you want, it is nice.
