Only compatible with Windows 7 to a certain degree...

Although the seller's description is technically accurate "compatible with Windows 98 and later," that is a little misleading. The Windows Toolbox and HP Print and Scan Doctor utilities that one needs to align the printheads are not compatible with any OS later than Windows XP. After much research and experimenting with both of these programs (Windows Toolbox is mentioned in the user's manual in the troubleshooting steps), HP representatives themselves have told me there is no way to align printheads on this printer. Fine when it's new, but the manual instructs one to align the printheads each time ink cartridges are changed, also says to clean and align as part of several different troubleshooting steps. So if you have problems with the printer down the road you are out of luck, at least for aligning printheads. This printer, I was told by HP, is more than 10 years old. The driver is included in the Windows 7 OS; I don't know about Windows 8. SO, it is compatible to a certain degree - it will function, but troubleshooting and following instructions for aligning printheads contained in the user's manual is not possible. If you don't believe me, check out the HP forums.

I purchased the printer in October and have used it sporadically until now (early December). I have yet to replace the ink cartridges, which means it has easily printed a couple hundred pages. For a portable printer, it's hard to get better than this. The printer is reasonably fast, installation was a breeze, and aside from being a little bulky, it's the perfect road-warrior companion. The battery feature is fantastic and thus far hasn't presented any problems. I used the reviews by others on this product to make my decision and unlike those that rated the product low, I has zero problems with the driver installation (just popped in the CD and was ready in a few minutes) but remember to have or purchase a USB cord if you don't already have one. I also haven't changed the printer settings and haven't had any ink problems but haven't printed photos. My feeling is that if you want to print photos, you should get a photo printer. Finally, by a little bulky, I mean that it is a bit thick but it still fits in my briefbag with my laptop and all the cords but that's all that will fit in there.

Tiny Cute and a Workhorse: the HP Deskjet 460!

I own both an HP Deskjet 460 and a Canon IP100. The Canon is shot already, but the HP chugs on.

I originally purchased the small printers because I traveled and needed a printer wherever I went
with my portable laptop. I can not praise the HP Deskjet 460 enough...it is a little work horse,
prints beautifully, both photo and regular. It is so tiny I fit it in with the laptop in the standard
'computer' case. Having a printer associated with my laptop is invaluable when I am in a hotel
or away from home. I try to purchase enough toner to last. It takes a color cartridge and a black
cartridge. The color usually lasts longer as long as I am not printing colors. I would recommend
this printer whole heartedly, especially if you often travel with your laptop. +

HP has distinguished themselves by providing a portable color USB printer that is compatible with Linux operating systems. If you plan on air travel, order the travel protectors or equivalent for both printer cartridges. The product is susceptible to deformities, if not adequately wrapped for shipping. Printer cartridges can cost an "arm and a leg" elsewhere. So have backups!

The whole experience was less then desirible but HP were ok once I got to speak to a rep. They want to handle everythin with chat. I explained it was new and finally got to speak to someone. Did not call or ask Amazone for any assistance

this was a lifesaver when I was in college, I could set up anywhere and not worry about finding power for my laptop and printer. I had a data card for the laptop, and the rechargeable printer made it possible to work anywhere. I also could not believe how little ink this unit used. I sold it after college, and my friend finally had to buy ink. I never had to replace the ink in this printer. My friend works out of her car, as a behavior analyst. There are many times when she would have to work on the go, so even when she took her laptop inside, she so rarely needs to find power outlets, she just charges her laptop and printer at home and is good for at least a couple days of printing of documents. She has also found, as I did, that the draft setting which uses less ink, prints as if it is on the best quality setting
