I have tried to find a longer adapter, but so far have had no luck. If anyone knows where to get one, please let me know.
There is an alternative way to use the adapter. It's not perfect, but does seem to work better. Instead of screwing the adapter into the top of the clamp, take the adapter, reverse it and screw it into the device's 1/4-20 screw so that the adapter head is at the bottom. Then screw the device into the bottom of the clamp. I can't tell you how many extra mm of hold this gives, but it feels like a more solid hold. One note of caution. When you unscrew the device from the clamp, the adapter also unscrews but does not always stay with the screw on the device, so be sure to make sure it does not fall off on the ground where it could easily get lost. It might be wise to go to a camera store and pick up some spares just in case.
February 5, 2014 update:
I found another way to attach the Desmond clamp to a quick release plate. 1) Screw the bushing into the Desmond from the top as it is normally done. 2) Remove the 1/4 x 20 screw from the quick release plate (if it cannot be removed, this idea won't work). 3) Take the Desmond clamp and quick release plate to a hardware store where you can purchase individual 1/4 x 20 screws. 4) Find a screw and a compatible split ring washer that can go up through the bottom of the quick release plate and screw into the bushing on the Desmond. The screw should be just long enough to get well up into the bushing without going above it. Also, check the screw head to make sure it will not interfere with attaching the quick release plate back onto the ball head. The purpose of the split ring washer is to keep the screw from loosening up when the Desmond clamp/ quick release plate unit is rotated on the tripod. This should provide a more solid way to use the Desmond.
My old standby Stroboframe 300-QRC Replacement Quick-Release Plate automatically springlocks together nicely and much faster, with no left/right play, but not absolutely solidly, and allows the camera to move up and down ever so slightly. When shooting video and trying to focus long lenses, it just isn't up to snuff.
This Desmond is nicely built. The tightening knob is serrated, but is pretty smooth and could be a little "grippier" I might put a piece of shrink tube over it.
The combined height of the base with the mating DP-70 plate Desmond P-70 70mm QR Lens Plate Arca Compatible Dual Dovetail & D-Ring P70 DP-70 is .909" (23.11 mm). The thickness of the base alone without the plate is .492".
The mounting hole is threaded for 3/8-16 and the top side is countersunk should you want to mount it from the top with a flat head bolt. There's at least 1/4" of thread in the base and with a base plate almost 1/2" thick, it's not likely any threads from the mounting bolt will protrude upward. Be aware a cross shaped recess is machined into the base around the mounting hole. This means there are no threads for the first 1/8". You will need at least 1/4" (3/8" would be better) of bolt threads to reach up into the base's threads.
The DAC-02 base is 60mm wide (2.366") x 51mm (2"). The overall length including the tightening knob is 3.275" (not counting the bubble level, which is removable using a tiny hex wrench.)
The safety system is two small capscrews screwed into the underside of the camera plate. When the tightening screw is loosened, the camera/baseplate can be slid left and right freely until the capscrews run into machined recesses in the base. You have to unscrew the tightening knob three full turns before you can lift the dovetailed plate out of the matching base. Built in springs push the two halves of the base apart as you unscrew the tightening knob.
Like others, the 3/8-to-1/4 adapter bushing did not come with the unit, though it is clearly advertized that it would. A bit disappointing, but minor.
Because it's solid machined aluminum, it's not extremely lightweight, but you'll like its sturdy feel and high quality anodized finish.
The only drawback on this plate was that it does NOT work with the manfrotto 501HDV video head and that long Manfrotto QR plate it uses. The plate will mount to the clamp just fine, but because the video head has such a wide deck, the big knurled knob on the Desmond for tightening the camera mount hits into the deck. So for that specific head/plate combo I had to purchase a similar clamp with a much longer knob shaft, and that one worked. It was the SunwayFoto DLC-60L Long Handle 60mm Duo-Lever Clamp... it works with the video head but it's twice the price of the Desmond. For regular tripod and monopod situations the Desmond is best value for the dollar, the clamp is strong and holds perfectly will. For large video heads, you'll need the Sunwayfoto DLC-60L: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009J3YMU8/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
