Quite simply the story that surrounds this is nice but the sex scenes is what seemed to give it the extra length. The couple both had their own hurdles to overcome and it was fun to read about the two growing together and learning to love the other. Sarah broke her back when she fell from her horse at 16. She does not beat around the bush when expressing thoughts to the duke and that earned my respect early on. I hate a h that is written weak and self pitying. Nathaniel has a drinking problem as he deals with guilt over an old friends death. He tries to through cruel words and his weight around with Sarah but with each test of authority he would follow it up with an apology.
I found that charming about Nate. Several times Sarah tried to recommend a mistress to Nate and while I could understand why she would feel unable to satisfy his needs I was disappointed as far into the story her suggestions were purposed. I would have liked to see her further in the story put her foot down with such thoughts demanding faithfulness. Nate is completely loyal so don't be mislead by my words it was all on Sarah's end but it was Nate who reminded her he had no need to seek out anyone else. This is where all the how to scenes came in.
It was a unique approach to let us see into the complications that would naturally arise and I did read quite a few but at 80% I started to skim. I am not a prude but once the initial mechanics were conceived and worked out I felt it unnecessary to keep going into so much detail. There was also some spelling and grammatical errors but not enough to take away from the book. Nate did mention at one point in the story that he needed to straighten up he was nearly 30. Sarah later brings up that he is 31 years old. They were only a few days into their marriage. The mystery attacks that occur ended a bit predictable but it still wasn't quite clear. I was happy with that along with the duke beating the crap out of Sarah's abductor.
I feared after her last book that ET would let them off easy and that was not the case. Thanks for that because they deserved worse. I ended up going with a 3 and 1/2 star rating because of the parts that drug a bit for me. I think that is what made me like The St Nicholas Day Wager better because it was the perfect length for what it delivered. This one could have been shorter and less monotonous to have a better effect. It is still a good story. Enjoy!
