The #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil…
New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two―but they’d been equally desperate.
Unfortunately, they didn’t get away fast enough. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene.
Mina’s expensive, elegant clothes and beauty products convince Dallas that she was being groomed, literally and figuratively, for sex trafficking―and that whoever is investing in this high-overhead operation expects windfall profits. Her billionaire husband, Roarke, may be able to help, considering his ties to the city’s ultra-rich. But Roarke is also worried about the effect this case is having on Dallas, as it brings a rage to the surface she can barely control. No matter what, she must keep her head clear--because above all, she is desperate for justice and to take down those who prey on and torment the innocent.

I would add, if you aren't a fan yet of the 'In Death' books, much of the in-house jokes and the relationships among the characters will be lost on you. While it IS a stand-alone, as are all 50+ books in this series, the characters learn, grow, and add as the series goes on, so it's best to see where they all started and how they all fit in the big picture rather than in just a snapshot.
This book deals with human trafficking, especially with young girls, so that could be a major trigger for some. This is clearly given in the description, so there's no need for a 'warning'. It was disturbing to read about, but even worse to know this is based on real-life events happening all over the world, and a scary practice that should be eliminated. It's too bad we don't have dozens of Eve Dallases and her team!
As with the previous book, I love seeing the characters grow and change, and it was epic to see 'Mama Bear' fierce Mavis in action! It was also good to see that although Eve and Mavis, bff for a long while, disagreed, they could agree to disagree and still be fiercely and utterly loyal to each other, themselves, and those who trusted them.
We're getting a mega cast of characters, and seeing some who have been standing in the background through the season come forward is a nice change and spotlight. Adding new ones is also great, though I need a description added as to who is who and how they fit!
Also revealed near the end are the villains, and the takedown is in true Eve Dallas style. A must read for all In Death fans and a great mystery for ones just discovering the series.
I’ll just say there are some long series I have read that fall into two categories. the first is when each new book is a romance about a new couple and maybe old characters make an appearance. The other is that the series main character just is recycled doing the same things over and over surrounded by a never changing, never evolving cast of characters. Some may be comforted by visiting static characters who never learn anything— I am not one of them and appreciate the ever evolving and growing of Dallas, Roarke, and their ever expanding group of friends. And other than Jamie Fraser, is there any more amazing male lead character than Roarke!?
I checked out a copy of this book from my local library using the Libby App. All opinions are my own.

The story remains interesting, with all the usual suspects, or should that be cast of characters.
Importantly the author did not avoid the grey areas
Which I think were important nor the reality of the outcomes.
Do read this book, JD Robb is an excellent writer, I have all her books. Enjoy.
Ok, im rambling..but i cant say enough good about this. My screen and game character name in countless games is Shebody for example 😝😍 And have been for as long as computer games became normal. They are my go-to books to re-read. Read them all many times. My dram is to at some point get them all in English paperback as well as my kindle version.
