This has been the single most favorite movie of all the movies we've gotten for the grandkids. It's funny, the minions are a hoot, the kids can follow the plot, and there are no sour or off-tune bits. There's a bit of edgy fun for grownups, but that doesn't mess with the timing or feel of the movie from the kids' point of view.
Despicable Me: 9 out of 10: Yes the movie that started an industry larger than some small nations GDPs Despicable Me is better remembered for what it launched than as a stand-alone movie itself. And that is a bit of a shame.
Despicable Me has one thing that none of the sequels had. A true villain. No, not the antagonist Vector I am talking about Gru. Gru, for at least the first half of this film, is a proper bad guy. When one of the girls apparently is crushed in a torture device Gru’s reaction is that his scheme will still work with two of them. This, of course, gives Gru a proper character arc in this film which leads to taking out the tissues at the end. (Why is it always kids movies that start the waterworks with me).
The rest of the film is also top notch with the minions ( Yes a slightly less obnoxious version of Ubisoft’s Rabbids) fully formed and delightful, Gru’s evil cohorts delightful and a macabre world that seems to live just on this side of an Addam’s family cartoon. The three girls are well drawn (character wise) with distinct and easily recognizable personalities and the whole story is some nice slapstick silliness with great call outs for the parent's in the room (That Godfather reference was particularly well placed)
Overall a great start to what ended up being a fun franchise that never was quite as good as its first outing.
hello, what a great story and plot. the bad guy (evil villain) has a heart. the abundance of minions makes this movie a lot more fun. they speak minion that has a little spanish, english, and a bunch of other things thrown in. fast talking, but understandable when the story line is followed. the creation of minions led to the follow up movies, but with greater digital features. this was a great introduction to the minions and their quirky personas...
For Christmas we got this and "Despicable Me 2" (the original one) for my eight year old daughter. We take her to see pretty much EVERY family-friendly movie that comes to the theaters, and I have to say, the Despicable Me series holds a special place in our hearts- not only is it wildly appealing to children, both movies are also very, very funny. And both films stand the test of repeated watching.
Out of both films, I like this one best- it's slightly more clever and "sharp" than the sequel. I still think it's one of the funniest films we've seen in the past several years (kid-friendly and non-kid-friendly movies included)- there are things in "Despicable Me" that will appeal to kids and then there are little things included throughout the movie that are designed to appeal to the grown-ups who watch the movie with them that the kids don't get. I kinda like that.
Whether you have seen this movie a zillion times or you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, I highly recommend just going ahead and adding it to your movie collection. It's silly, clever fun. And sometimes that makes for the very best movies.
I decided to pick up Despicable Me and the Minion movie because one of my coworkers briefly changed the screen savers in the office to the Minions awhile back and I had no clue what they were about. While that’s not uncommon for me to be unaware of popular culture, I decided that it would be wise to check these out for the sake of not being left out of something. At first glance, a super villain doesn’t exactly strike one as a very sympathetic or likeable figure, but it’s all in what you do with it.
He's somewhat old in the super villain world and doesn’t seem to be able to pull off the eye popping heists that the younger super villains are. There’s a definite feeling that his best days are behind him. That makes him identifiable with much of the audience. There’s also the added element of “well if I pull off this one big thing or moment, I’ll be back on top.” So you have this great quest and feeling that people can identify with + some Minions and you have something really entertaining.
Add in a particularly obnoxious younger super-villain and three little girls who slowly bring out the better in Grew and the viewer surprisingly finds themselves rooting for Grew in one of the greatest double turns in recent history. Even better, I as a 33 year old man who has grown somewhat cynical was laughing out loud and totally lost myself while watching Despicable Me, even if in some ways it isn’t quite right.
Utterly adorable and with good morals. It drops a star for the scene where the little girl holds her breath to get her own way, but that's because I think it will give some children of an impressionable age the wrong ideas. The minions are so charming it's hard not to wish they were in every animated film. Carrell does a great job voicing the villainous Gru, who isn't nearly as bad as he'd like to be. The animation is so slick and seamless that one now takes for granted how much work goes into scenes of spraying water and disco lights. The ode to Saturday Night Fever was one of the most entertaining scenes and the minions, not unlike The Muppets are capable of doing comical things the kids will laugh at, but also slipping in humor the adults will like - all without going over the line for a family audience. Brilliant stuff!
The first film by illuminatination Animation with a great Pharrell theme tune, punchy animation and hilarious scripting carried by Steve carrel as Gru, this movie is a must for anyone with a sense of humour. Despite three Despicable me movies the Minions continue to be more popular than Gru....
I got this on a friend's recommendation and was dubious to begin with. All I can say is that it's loud, it's corny, the plot's beyond belief... and it's one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen. The main character has some good one-liners; the little kids are adorable and even the squeaky minions are fun rather than irritating. (I have to admit that my favourite character was the scary 'dog' even though it's not a main role.)
Play this and go back into your second childhood... with some clever adult twists.
There is little more to say about this film. It is a magnificent animated feature that manages to be funny, charming, sweet, and have a great story. There is plenty for both Adults and Kids to love, it also introduced the world to the minions who steal every scene they are put in, The voice cast is universally magnificent and the script is perfect with enough bite to keep parents interested and enough broad comedy and crude jokes to make children scream with laughter. The moral and emotional impact are done fairly subtly and not hammered home which adds to it's effectiveness for me. I would recommend this to all parents (as long as you are prepared for the minion love in that will no doubt follow)
The film is disappointing and not nearly as good as The Minions. I had not realized that Despicable Me was made BEFORE The Minions. I assumed it came after The Minions and would be equally good. The characterization is not so rounded and the plotline more simplistic.

Every once in a while a pleasant surprise comes along and makes you smile. I'm old school when it comes to movies for kids, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Wizard of Oz, National Velvet. I think you can't beat old Hollywood and newer classics, E.T, Annie etc etc. When I saw this advertised I wasn't at all convinced that it would be good at all. Boy was I wrong. It's an AMAZING film, super funny for both kids and adults and is simply a little gem of a movie. I was so impressed that I couldn't wait for Despecable Me 2 and I nearly had to be thrown out of the cinema for laughing! LOVE LOVE LOVE it. BUY THIS MOVIE.
5.0 out of 5 starsOne of the best animations - a classic!

I love this movie!!!! It's just so wonderfully scripted, acted and has the minutest details. Each time I watch Despicable Me I spot something I missed before. Steve Carell makes Gru so loveable you can excuse the fact he's an evil inventor trying to take over the world (or the moon!) The minions who carry out his evil deeds alongside him are wonderful and once you've watched this movie you'll want one of your very own! And the interaction between Gru and the three adorable girls he adopts is wonderful, as they slowly begin to grow on him, melting his heart as yours will too. This is a great movie for all ages and you'll enjoy this just as much as the kids will!
I recently bought a 3D TV, largely for PS3 games. I wanted to try a 3D film and having seen clips of this at work (I work on a 2D - 3D conversion chip) it looked like a good one to put my TV through it's paces. I was not disappointed! The film itself is good, I thought it was funny and really I'm probably too old to be watching cartoons.. The 3D is great, usually quite subtle but some parts really pop out, way more than I had expected. It is used to great effect without being intrusive, exactly what I would want from a 3D film. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll leave it at that, but if you want a film to try out your new 3D TV or to show it off to doubters, this is ideal.

This absolutely charming movie features Gru, a supervillain with problems. His bank has made funding for his project to steal the Moon contingent upon him obtaining a shrink ray, and when this is stolen from him in turn by a younger, brasher rival, he adopts three cookie-selling orphans in order to sneak his way in to his enemy's supervillain base and get it back again.
Of course things get complicsted with the orphans and along the way Gru has to choose between the fruits of villainy and being a father. It's a very cute and funny entertainment and it looks great: bright colours and wonderful visual gags. I think adults could enjoy it as much, if not more, than children. Definitely worth a look.
There are so many animated film around these days and a lot of them are pretty rubbish. Despicable me is really great though with great characters and a story line that is a perfect mix between ridiculous and heart warming. There are some genuinely funny parts to the film which both kids and adults will appreciate. I would go as far as to say its one of the better animated films out there and I guess that's why they are bringing out a second film!
I think that the 3d added to this film considerably. It's not too bad for pointing stuff out of the screen just for the sake of it but does have some moments which make you duck for cover.
If you like animated films or you have kids then I would definitely recommend this film and I'm looking onward to the sequel.
Really funny film. My girls love it (aged 4 & 8). They can't get over, and laugh a lot, when the moon starts returning back to normal size. Classic silly cartoon stuff. Good for adults and children alike.

Always a good watch, My son loved it, the Augmented reality cover is a little bit over rated in my opinion, if you want to see what I mean you can you tube the augmented reality and judge for your self. The film itself is a great film, for my 4 year old, who is likely to keep gong back to it for at least a few more years to come.
After my son had watch this film in school he wanted to watch number two in cinema with the thought of buying it when I cames out thought I'd better buy number one first, plus the price was fab and del even better. Even thou I haven't actually showed my son I've bought this yet as thought it would be a lil extra gift for his birthday in a couple of wks, I know he's gonna to be happy with it ready for when number two cames out in a few wks. All round a happy mammy on price and son on DVD
An enjoyable childrens cartoon, with enough irony and humour to be fun for adults too. It's about a master criminal who 'adopts' 3 girls from an orphanage to help him in a darstadly schemes. Of course the girls bring out his latent good side, and he winds up being a 'good guy'. One of most 'fun' parts of the film, (according to my 29 yr. old daughter) are the criminals helpers, genetically engineered midgets/robots, which she calls cute. In all, not a classic piece of cinephotography, but not a bad way to entertain the chidren for an hour and an half.

I was not normally a fan of animated films until I started watching them in 3d. Now I think they are some of the best use of 3d films. This is one of the funniest animated films for people of all ages really. The 3d is good not with things flying out of the screen as hardly any films do that but with the depth and how natural things look in 3d. It is well worth watching in normal 2d but if you are into 3d then I I would say get this for your collection. I hope the second one is 3d too.
