What a collection! Bertrand's beautiful paintings and especially drawings display a playful joy in the female figure. I don't find it easy to describe these images - the transformations, layers, and assemblage of disparate components somehow come together in mysterious and elegant compositions. One trend I very much enjoy is the predominance of African features: deep skin dones, sensuous lips, dense hair, and more. The loving execution of these pictures offers a special tribute to that form of womanly beauty, one that I often see neglected in favor of other phenotypes.

The "Erotique" in this collection seems to build as you move through the sequence. Early on, the erotic element arises simply from the native grace of the woman's face and figure, set off by Bertrand's fantasy elements. Later in the collection, however, pairs of women appear, in increasingly intimate connection with each other. Further on, many images transform the vulvae in various ways, add add toys deeply set within the models, and increase the intimacy of the couples and groups. To my eye, however, even the more startling images are rendered with such care and affection that they never (or barely) cross the line into the vulgar.

The book opens with brief commentary, not that many pages and set in very large type. It's all in French, which I admit to be one of my lacks, so I can't comment on that content. The lush fantasies speak for themselves, though, even if they speak in a very private language of imagery.
