Not for everyone, but my wife and I found it hysterical
Verified purchase
There were moments in this movie where I laughed so hard I couldn't see straight, and that is damn rare for me. This is not a typical romantic comedy so much as misanthropes thrown together until they grudgingly enjoy each other's company. This movie isn't about two people falling into a romance, so much as two hurt, lonely, bitter people re-discovering the hope that romance might actually exist. Keanu Reeves doesn't make my list of favorite actors, but he is viciously funny throughout this movie. Winona Ryder nails her role as well, trading snide, sarcastic zingers back and forth with Keanu Reeves. Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder are the only ones with dialogue except for overheard t.v.s.

If you go into this movie wanting a traditional romantic comedy you will be bitterly disappointed. If you are looking for snappy, often hysterical, sarcasm delivered by two perfectly cast actors, you'll enjoy this.

a movie for smart people

It's full of cynicism and hope. This is a great movie, they are odd awkward characters - they are supposed to be - and yet they still have great chemistry, a deep friendship and growing connection. i really enjoyed this movie and if you are a movie buff or enjoy french romantic comedies you will enjoy this. I can only assume that the people that reviewed this badly just don't have the patience for a real film? The views, story line, banter and acting are all lovely.

Underrated movie - Gets you thinking...
Verified purchase
This is probably above the heads of the folks who rate the movie poorly. Overall, it's really well-done, well-carried by the two main stars, and really focuses on them being the only two people in the world--they are kind of "elevated" above all others (in many ways), and it's fun to see that play out in all aspects of the movie. Really good job writing, directing, and acting, and I've never seen a movie pull off what this movie does: it's only the relationship of the two stars that matter, and it's uniquely relatable in many ways. I need to watch it again to see if I can pick up more things I didn't get with the first watching.

Work of Art
Verified purchase
Woody Allen meets Absurdism meets Real Life. This movie isn’t going to be for everyone - but by no means does that mean that it’s not an extremely enjoyable, well executed film. It’s extremely funny - only 2 characters have speaking roles - and it’s straight dialogue.

You can’t think of it in terms of a “romcom” - you have to think of it as art - an exercise is dialogue driven film making.

This is really bad

What makes two big stars sign onto this movie is beyond me. There are absolutely no actors in this movie other than Keanu reeves and winona ryder. They conversed the entire movie. I think the directors tried to be witty and create the "When Harry Met Sally" vibe, but it was 90 minutes of monotone conversations that led to nowhere! I can not believe it. This feels like one of the low budget self-produced film by independent film makers - one of the bad ones. How did they even get two well known actor + actress to sign on?

Destination Dialogue
Verified purchase
And by dialogue, I mean it literally - two talkers. If you have been waiting to hear Neo and a P-Hat wearing angry lady talk a lot, a whole lot, this is the movie for you. They are the only speaking actors in the movie, everyone else is just an extra, unless the others say something in the second half of the movie, because that is when I stopped watching. But I doubt it. They are probably still talking even now... They even talked through the sex scene. While some of the dialogue is sharp and witty, it becomes tedious after a while, when you realize that the movie is nothing more than two curmudgeonly self absorbed people trying to warm up to each other like a couple of feral cats who realize maybe they met the perfect mate. This may be your idea of perfect movie, for us it was tedium and wanting 45 minutes of my life back..

These two are great.

I hesitated on 5, but it is a solid 4. This movie deserves a higher rating, either way. It is not for everyone, slow, thoughtful, simple. It is lighthearted and still manages to explore the human condition. A great love story.

Give Keanu and Winona credit - they are the ONLY people who talk in the movie!
Verified purchase
It's not Keanu and Winona's fault the script is just BAD...I mean, baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. But since I would watch Keanu read an instruction manual, maybe I just felt bad for them. I really think they were robbed the opportunity and we as fans to see them do something really great here. Maybe Joey is right...when it's not hot on screen, it's hot off screen?! They are the ONLY people who talk in the movie, so I think that adds to the lonely theme of this film. Very real, so not your typical romantic feel good movie and there is a lot of worthless chatter that makes you think at some point it would have been much better to let these two just be themselves and the movie would have worked. LOVE THEM! Always great to see them both!
