Fantastic if you have an unhealthy relationship with video games and alcohol like I do.
One of our friends has already quit, before December 2014, but two of us play on without him, and have joined an online community of other players. We play nearly every day (or at least every week), as there are both daily and weekly challenges.
Main pro is Destiny is simple fun. Lots of familiar mechanics for fans of first-person sci-fi shooters, and lots of action wherever you go. Hop on, shoot some hostile aliens, pick up loot, level up weapons, then go about your day. Maybe join some friends for PvE (player vs environment, aka, against the game's AI) or PvP (player vs player, competitive shenanigans). If you really want a challenge, gather a group of 6 players (if you don't know that many other Destiny players, there are many sites dedicated to linking you up with some) and test your mettle in one of the raids - extensive, multi-part missions that require lots of cooperation, communication, puzzle-solving, and obviously, some skill. Raids offer some of the best gear in the game, and are tuned to help IN their respective raids, so you may tackle the raid's harder difficulty.
The main con is repetition and plot. The plot is, well, unfinished and loosely pieced together. So don't get too hung up on the story. Although, there is an external system called the Grimoire, which displays much of the backstory and lore in a card format - collect certain items, perform certain actions, and complete specific events to unlock more cards. Each card includes information about what you unlocked, and/or a bit of story, maybe even a journal entry or transcript of a conversation. Little bits of info that paint a picture of the Destiny world, and in some ways, more in-depth than the game itself.
And then there's repetition. There are a set amount of worlds in the game, and set areas on each world (with slight additions to those worlds with each expansion), and set missions & strikes. But it won't take long to see it all and do it all, only to end up re-playing it. While i don't mind the repetition because i enjoy the gameplay (and i like collecting the different loot items), this has turned many players away.
The good news is the Bungie team still plays an active role in the game's development and progress (as they should, with their "10 Year Plan"), so they make periodic tweaks, changes, and additions to hopefully quench the collective thirst of the masses.
Even with my personal enjoyment of the game, i would still recommend potential players to try finding the game used, or on sale, especially since expansions will cost you ($30-ish for the season pass that includes 2 expansions). I didn't mind the price, but i wouldn't want to see anyone get burned.
The music is amazing! Control is great!
Note: you MUST be online and connected to PSN to play the game. I did get bumped offline once (not from my end) but I picked up where I left off no problem, losing only a bit of the patrol mission I was currently engaged in.
I recommend it for anyone who owns a PS3, even if this isn't their usual genre.
