The Campaign
- This was one of the biggest issues Destiny had on Day One. Missions had little context, bosses didn't have much background or the enemies you faced and the campaign itself was short. It felt as if content was cut out. Well, here, that is no longer the case. With Destiny being re-released with all the content for a $60 price, the difference is almost staggering. New cutscenes have been added to the intro with your ghost talking about the collapse and is desperate search for you, your Ghost has a new and MUCH BETTER voice actor as well as new dialogue. The Ghost has been brought to life in a new, better way because of this.
- Missions now have more context, as you get the Standard Missions, Strike Missions and even the missions from all the DLC from people at The Vanguard who tell you why you're going on this Missions/Strike and what its for. You even get more details on the bosses in the Strikes. Some more details of the missions and what they're about are shown in this new Quest UI that was added to the menus where your Inventory and Settings are. This allows you to look at what the mission is about in case you don't remember, need a small breakdown or even want to track the question. This new tracking mechanic also applies to bounties and other missions given out from characters from The Vanguard, Crucible, Eris, etc, This is a GOD-SEND! Story missions now have meaning and are much more fun and interesting as a result. Also, more bounties can be carried and can be turned in without needing to go to The Tower, allowing people to continue their adventure without interruptions and repetitive errands of going back and forth between The Tower unless you need more bounties. However, with the total amount you can carry, you won't have to go back for fresh bounties for a while.
- New Cutscenes have been added to the game, especially for The Taken King campaign stories. Within these cutscenes, we see character development mostly from Eris and Cayde-6 and it is beautiful to see. Usually, the most character development we saw were the phrases the NPC's said when we walked up to them or something like that. They are beautiful and a joy to watch.
The New Progression & Loot System
- Another thing that got on everyone's nerves on Day One was the random loot drop and the grindy Progression System. This has been fixed in big ways. Now, at the end of every Strike, especially on Playlists, I have always gotten multiple engrams, all of them Rare along with something from the boss to sell to The Cryptarch. Instead of Reward being a game, it is now guaranteed. YOU WILL get something from a Strike and defeating that boss now. I got many pieces of better armor from Strikes because of this and it felt VERY GOOD. No more raging from getting absolutely nothing. I no longer get nothing. Not a single time have I gotten nothing from a Strike. This also applies to Crucible matches. The rewards are not as plentiful but I've always gotten SOMETHING. Rather it be an engram for an armor piece, a new cape or a Strange Coin, I always get rewarded at the end of a Crucible match, even if I lost. If I ever got nothing, it wasn't often. Maybe once or twice and I can't recall the mission I was doing, but those few times were quickly outnumbered and forgotten from how much I was rewarded.
- The Progression System is much less of a grind, although you technically still grind the crap out of it. The level and light system are now separated, allowing you to level up independently from your light level. Your light level now increases from your weapons and gear while your actual level increases from playing Crucible matches, doing story missions and completing bounties. They are no longer tied together and you level up MUCH quicker because of this. I was even getting certain abilities like my Double Jump earlier in the game than before when I played Day One. This means if you need to level up to catch up with friends like I had to, its now much easier and faster. Also, the faster progression feels better and more rewarding, as you're getting new abilities and finding new gear more often since you're getting stronger much quicker.
My Ultimate Conclusion (Why 4 Stars and Not 5?)
- This new Destiny is the game Destiny SHOULD HAVE BEEN at launch. If you haven't played the game before, I highly recommend jumping on the Destiny Band Wagon and starting off your experience with this. If you're someone like me who had the Day One experience, I hope you will give Destiny a second chance like I did, because I believe it is worth it. The changes and improvements to Gameplay, Story, Progression and the Loot System all make this game such a joy to play. However, as a Day One player, part of me still feels cheated. Like this was all part of the plan. Like they PLANNED to release the game with all of these improvements to all these things to make it look like they were "listening to the fans" when its all a greedy scheme to make more money. In some way, it almost sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I sometimes wonder if these improvements and re-release was more part of a plan than "caring and listening to the fans" as one would say. However, does that make it a bad game? No, it doesn't, but I felt that was something important to point out. Rather this was part of an evil scheme or not, the improvements make this game that much better. So much better that I ask people who gave up on the game to give it a second chance, and those who didn't get the chance to add it to your library. Bungie tried to milk money out of fans with Emotes with The Taken King's Digital Collector's Edition, and because of us, they changed their ways. Maybe we can do that with the game and make it better in the future. It gives me hope. I also wanted to point that out. If you disagree, that's okay. It's a good game but it's not a PERFECT GAME.
Pros: Graphics are great smooth, and detailed throughout; I notice no framerate drops during play. There are 3 classes to choose from each class having 3 sub classes that you unlock grenades and super ablilities for along the way. The 3rd and newest subclass for each individual class is unlocked through a quest about halfway through the story. The super abilities are fun and the vanguard strikes can be addicting. You run through level 36 bosses a different mission loads each time. It is a great way to level up and get gear and exotics. Overall a decent gaming experience.
Now lets get into the cons. Have you ever played a game and thought "this game is good if they fixed these tiny little things it would be excellent"? That is destiny... the cons aren't huge (save one arguably) but they are so recurring that it can be very annoying and infuriating.
Cons: Aiming... Dear God the aiming... destiny has an aim assist system. Basically, each gun has a hidden value that determines how much your crosshair, while aiming down your sights or from the hip, slows down when you drag it across an enemy. Also this value determines how much your bullets will be pull to your enemy meaning, if you are very close to dying and hide behind something you can still die from aim assist since 1bullet could be pulled toward you. In Destiny most primary weapons can take 1/3rd to half the clip to kill an enemy, so, the other major problem with aim assist is you will notice when you aiming if you are shooting at one enemy and another steps in front your crosshairs while jump to him or inbetween them and you will die from two enemies shooting you...
Not done going on about aiming yet... In general the controls while aiming down your sights are god awful... So much so that you have to strafe (move sideways) to land accurate shots. Trying to move my right analog stick and shoot feels so unresponsive its terrible. Even if I lower my sensitivity now my cursor moves way to slow and I can't play on a swivel. So aiming = bad.
2nd major con: no quest board or lobby for raids or story missions. Story missions will get pretty boring a 100% fix to this is putting matchmaking on them like you can for strikes. But for whatever reason Bethesda decided not to do this and you can only do story missions with people in your party aka fireteam. Also, raids take an hour plus on average to complete and you need to communicate with your fireteam to do so. There is no matchmaking, Lobby or questboard for raids.... What does this mean? You have to go OUTSIDE the game to find a team to do raids.... Major drawback more annoying than anything.
The final con is the story. I personally do not mind if a game doesn't have a story if the gameplay makes up for it. In destiny there is a story but we are not told too much about it and have to fill in the blanks. Destiny has this huge world, backstory and history but you have to go outside the game on wikis to get it. Yes the game has grimoire cards that tell you some story; but, they are vague, short and absent of detail.
Overall, Destiny is a great game outside of the aiming mechanics and lack of matchmaking for a couple modes it is a great play and has taken hours of my life. Just get ready to be frustrated with aiming and have it get you killed 40% of the time.
