The Taken King is a great expansion that gives every mission meaning. Now there is still room for improvement, but the improvements that have been made this far are great leaps ahead of what this game was in its first year. Players get communications through out the mission that update the situation and clarify the situation and objective changes. One of the greatest things about this game is that there is a playable demo to try on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, which means that most reviews are not as important because your opinion in trying the game out is more important in the decision making.
The reason that I did not give this product 5 stars is because there is still room for improvement. Worlds could have more areas instead of just the same areas to do missions, the constant need to go to the HUB or Tower to turn in and then get the next mission could be reduced, and making certain events more appealing so that you do not have to wait on certain events for the game to build a Fire-Team only to be thrust into an important mission without having located team members. The planet's will should more locations, i.e. I'm sure Russia is not the only location on Earth that was damaged in the fall or has any importance. Returning to the Hub and having to endure loading into it every time I go back in is tedious. This makes me wonder why I can get mission updates during a mission but I cannot turn in the mission from my ship and then get the next one. Lastly, I can not count on one hand the amount of times I have tried to do an event or go into a certain mission meant for a Fire-Team of 3 to go in there and not be able to do said mission or event alone because no one was doing said mission or event. Sure you can go in with friends but what if you have no friend online?
As I mentioned before this is a huge improvement over the original game and with this quality of improvement I feel secure in knowing that great things are still to come. I suggest giving the demo a try and seeing for yourself. Then you can buy the game or not based on your experience.
As such I do understand Destiny would appeal to a lot of people, but this is my review for those out there like me.
Destiny graphics are good, gameplay is simple and character development is really just sufficient, but not a show stopper. Where it falls short is the story. The story has the foundation for a very good game, but the way it is told, and the overall lack of details make it simply incomplete. Let me be straightforward here, you pay for a game with a couple expansions, but you don't even get a complete game. A lot of the story is left out, maybe for later expansions, but as it stands, there is no real cohesion with the story telling.
I compared the game with one from a couple years back: Mass Effect. Only because of the many similarities. While Destiny excels in the actual game play, it pales in comparison to the story development and character interaction. I believe Destiny is made more for the online aspect more than a solo or single player experience. Just as Star Wars Battlefront was been knocked for the lack of any real story, Destiny for ME falls in the same, but just a little better disguised.
I thoroughly enjoy it playing with a team, and meeting new 'friends' on the network. But at the cost, I should be able to get a FULL game, story and all. Very few cut scenes, but was expected with the lack of the story.
Overall, I still play and enjoy it, but cannot rate it any higher as the value is lacking from my opinion.
-Story missions
-PvP with other gurdians
-PvE in vanguard strikes (1 to 3 players take on NPC's in small strikes)
-Daily strikes (Slightly more difficult strikes with special daily bonuses; 1 to 3 players)
-Weekly strikes (more intense strikes than the daily ones; 1 to 3 players)
-Weekly Nightfall strikes (much more difficult weekly strikes awarding greater loot; 1 to 3 players- note you must form your own fireteam for this one, there is no matchmaking like in the other strikes)
-Patrols: you can patrol the planets and the Taken King's ship to kill enemies and gather resources used for upgrading gear; often you will run into public events like kill target x before it reaches point y and so on
-RAIDS: easily the coolest and most difficult aspect of the game. Gather a team of 6 guardians to take on some seriously difficult challenges; these can take anywhere from 40 minutes to several hours, depending on skill and experience. Raids have the best chance at dropping the most powerful gear
In summation, if you enjoy loot-based shooters like Borderlands, you will absolutely love this game. Just be prepared, you are going to spend a LOT of time playing this game.
It's basically a Halo MMO. Controls feel like Halo, weapons fire like Halo, and maps look like from the Halo engine. If you're into console FPSs and like MMO mechanics loot drops, dungeon runs, and raids then Destiny is your game. Both PVP and PVE are polished game modes. PVE modes difficulty takes attention and skill when compared to most other games out there. That's until the patch it or something to make the modes easy so causals can get loot to catch up hardcore players, but that's a different story.
All in All, if you enjoy FPS and MMOs, in that order, you'll like this game.
