Beverly Jenkins' newest book, "Destiny's Surrender" is one of her greatest among her great.
From the very first word on the page I was hooked and could not put the book down.
I finished the book in one sitting from 1030 pm until 0230 that morning.
Educational, Inspiring, Historical, and did I mention Sizzling Hot!
You got to read this book!

This was my first Beverly Jenkins, and if you're going to pop your cherry with an author, why not do it with a screaming orgasm in the very first line?

Billie is a whore and a total bad-a$$, and she's apologizing for neither. Love that she's an emotionally strong person, not just a sexy heroine. She gets herself into trouble by doing two things: falling in love with a client, and deciding to keep the child she's pregnant with, instead of aborting, though there's no guarantee it belongs to her favorite client.

There were some things about this book I didn't love: use of literary cliches throughout, but mostly, that Drew was a weak hero. *spoiler alert* He was marrying Rosa because Mama wanted him to, and when that blew up, he married Billie against his own inclinations, he accepted being virtually disbarred because of his color, and then in the end... ugh! You know a serious bad guy is after your wife and child, dontcha think you might want to keep a guard on them? Also, I thought it unrealistic that the baddie would leave Mariah and her daughter totally unmolested when he'd otherwise stopped at nothing to destroy those who previously got in his way, down to Emmaline's maid?

I did like the way the storyline didn't follow "normal" romance storylines, with the hero falling in love after the marriage, and the way Billie did not let Drew off the hook with his parenting responsibilities. Loved Alanza and her fierce defense of her family, and the B-romance with her and Max.

You know when you know an author has written something that pierce your soul, it's when you cannot stop turning the page and you yearn for more. That is how I felt when I received my copies of Desting Surrender. You see I said copies. I have one on my kindle fire, and the other in paperback. Best purchasing decisions. As when my kindle became low on battery I was able to pick up where I left off and read my paperback. What had drawn me into this story more than anything was Alanza. I loved her in Destiny Embrace, and I loced her even more in Destiny Surrender. The relationship between Alanza and the members of her family are inspiring. I pray to one day have such a wonderful relationship with my future MIL. I love the love between Mina (I prefer that over Billie) and Drew. I mean the open credits is jaw dropping, but the dynamic and the rollercoaster to get them to their destiny is what dreams are made of. You felt the passion, you felt the tormoil, you just wanted to see them conquer all. They are truly my I Corithians definition on love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 ESV

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Great job Ms. Bev, I look forward to the next story.

This I my first Beverly Jenkins book. I kept passing her books up because I wasn't sure I would be able to get into romance novels from the 1800's. I was so wrong. This was a very good book. The story was beautiful. It wasn't one where you knew exactly how it was going to end. It brought out a many different emotions. It provided lots of laughter as well. I really enjoyed it. Did not want to put it down. It has me looking for the first book in the Destiny series. Read it.

An excellent read. A friend introduced me to Beverly Jenkins a few months ago and I haven't stopped reading. This is the third brother I'm reading about and I'm thoroughly enjoying the story. Love the fire and passion between them. For a while it looked like things weren't going to work out between these two strong people, but of course what's romance without HEA. I love the fact that this heroine wasn't perfect, in fact, she's what one would call 'scarlet.' That's always fascinating. In a sense I liked the fact that the hero got 'caught.' He kept dipping in the till, so to speak, enjoying her favors, although he was paying for them, and at one point I thought that he needed to make an honest woman out of this very good--character wise--woman. Don't you know that circumstances coerced him into doing it. It was the best decision he ever made.

This book was surprisingly pretty good. I accidentally bought it and was going to send it back because I am not a big fan of historical romance novels but I thought I'd give it a try since it has African American characters and its hard to find romance novels featuring people of color. Surprisingly, the book was pretty engaging and kept my interest to the end. I liked the burgeoning love between Drew and Billie and I really loved the way most of his family embraced her pretty quickly. I think the part that puzzled me was the interracial community that surrounded Drew's ranch. This didn't seem to ring true for me although I don't know a lot about California's history in the late 19th century, nut the relatively easy blending of the different races certainly was not the norm in other parts of the United States at that time.

Some of her language seemed too modern for the time period; for example, adolescence is a 20th century concept; in the 19th century, children basically went from being children to adults, there was no in between stage. The fact that most of the townspeople around the ranch accepted Billie given her background as a prostitute also didn't seem realistic, particularly for that time period. Not sure I'm going to read the other books in this series because they are more expensive but this one was inexpensive and entertaining.
