Why did/do they seek her death? She saw something, something appalling. And who are the ‘they’? Government types, capable of picking up a phone and arranging a government-sponsored murder.
I will save the details for the reader. The story is told on two time levels—the present, in which Quinn seeks to save the woman (a ‘courier’ named Mila Voss) and the not-so-distant past in which Mila Voss’s attempted murder occurred. Battles cuts back and forth between the two plots for added suspense.
And yes, Nate is there, in fine fettle, as well as Orlando and a compatriot called Daeng. The narrative is, as always, a globe-trot, and the conclusion is spectacular, the result of a Quinn mind-game worthy of the best of the original Mission Impossible series.
Brett Battles is the emperor of espionage. This is among the best of the Jonathan Quinn novels. Devour it.
I wish we could get to know Quinn a little better. If Battles has a flaw as a writer its in character development. This is not meant as a criticism, because the Quinn books are quality fare the way he puts them out. More of a preference really. I could stand to have the action slowed just a hair, and get to know this guy a little.
I enjoy the series and wish Battles would have more discount sales. His books are just a little pricey for the content.
Still a great value when compared to the Gestapo mass publishing house prices.
Highly recommended subject to the notes above.
The plot in 'The Destroyed' revolves around the concept of power, and how absolute power corrupts. The application of this concept is well within the realm of the possible, given what has happened in the U.S. since 09/11/2001.
New readers can certainly start with 'The Destroyed', but be advised that the enjoyment will be significantly enhanced by reading earlier Quinn novels. You won't be disappointed and it won't take you too long to be caught up in the world of Quinn!
Although I found the story predictable, I will say that if you want a quick read that has a good story line with good characters, it's worth the price of a kindle book.
Entertaining start to finish.
