About the Author

Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex…her books have sex. She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends. She hangs out on Facebook all day every day, so if you want to pop in and say hi, she’s always ready to reply. If you enjoyed this book or her others, Pepper would love you forever if you could leave a brief review on Amazon. Her other books include: Tears of Tess (Monsters in the Dark #1) Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #2) Twisted Together (Monsters in the Dark #3 Coming May 2014) Debt Inheritance (Indebted Series. Coming Soon)

Attention - possible spoilers ahead!!

I do not want to write this review. Why, you ask? Because I don't enjoy being mean, and in this case I can't avoid it.
This book is a mess of epic proportions. I don't know what I expected, but certainly not what I got.
Let's start with the characters.

Roan Averin / Obsidian Fox.
This guy is so messed up I don't even know where to begin. Being kidnapped when he was only six years old, he was trained to be a killer. A soulless creature whose existence meant death and destruction. Now, he's left that life behind but the past can't be erased and, as much as he wants to be normal, it's just not possible.

Hazel “Zel” Hunter
Life hasn't been easy for Zel either. She grew up in foster care until the age of thirteen, when she decided that she had enough and ran away. At fifteen she got pregnant and gave birth to a daughter and struggled to make a decent living for herself and the child.

The plot.
Where to begin?
After going away from Russia, Fox (that's what he calls himself until later in the book) built a mansion in Australia that he's using as a fighting club. He's a loner and feared by everyone. The two decades spent as a killer have left a mark. He craves pain. He needs pain to keep him sane or almost sane and no one can touch him without ending up hurt or worse, dead. The torture inflicted on him during his life in Russia served to program his brain into thinking that whoever touched him had to die. He's practically a robot. No will, no feelings.
One night, he meets Hazel in his club.
She's there with her friend Clue, trying to forget for a few hours that she has a dying daughter at home. The moment she sees Fox, it's instant attraction.
Nothing wrong so far.

The first half of Destroyed was a bit frustrating for me due to the constant repetition between the MC's. A great deal of time was spent going through the character's actions after first meeting each other. Their constant argument over her wanting to leave, and him wanting her to stay got a bit old and I found myself putting it down quite a few times. I had this same issue with the beginning of Quintessentially Q, but I remembered that it had gotten better, so I kept on reading. There's some violence and non-con situations that take place in this book, so if that bothers you then you may want to move on to something else.

The second half of Destroyed made the book worthwhile in my opinion. This author is excellent when it comes to describing the emotional state of her character's. Heartbreak, love, adoration, and desperation all come off as if they are your own feelings rather than those of fictional character's. That's what I look for in a good book. Yes, there were times where I had to suspend reality a bit, and there were times that I wanted to strangle the heroine for being such a drama queen, but my overall satisfaction of the story as a whole made up for that. The story of Roan seeking and ultimately finding redemption in the arms of a child and her mother did it for me :)

** spoiler alert ** What the flying F*** did I just read??

DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK. SPOIL CITY HERE.

This could have been a 1 or 2 star read for me, and maybe I am just not sure of how many things I did actually like.. I am so confused on what just happened.

First of all, let me tell you that 2 pages in I had to go to Goodreads and check out the shelves because I had a "oh no this is a paranormal read" moment. It's not paranormal but it sure felt that way. Things just got worse from there for me

When Fox, the: "screwed up, hot, scarred and scary dude" first sees Zel (her name is Hazel, but Zel for short) he is drawn to her, but that bothers him. He fights with a dude in his illegal fight ring and then when he sees Zel he goes up to her and says "who are you"? like a creep and proceeds 4 words in to ask her "why am I drawn to you"?

I mean really??

He doesn't look at her more than 3 times and he wants to know why he was drawn to her.. There was no previous interaction, he didn't watch her from afar in fact he had no real connect with her or inner dialogue that made me think he was considering her in any shape or form.

Then she basically goes all badass because she is a "grieving" mother because her daughter is ill (I will get to THAT whole situation in a second) and gives this scary guy attitude, which in any other book would fly for me.. Here it didn't

Fox basically kidnaps Zel and offers her 200,000 dollars to let him have sex with her an stay with him for a month.. Reminding you, he has barely spoken to her and he is a scary dude. It should have been hot.. But it wasn't.. (I am not forgetting this is suppose to be dark..

I'm gonna start with the obvious cliché...this book DESTROYED me. Even sitting down to write this, I'm having a hard time finding the words to describe it. Heart wrenching, sad, beautiful, poignant, sexy, visceral, raw, powerful...I could keep going. I had so many moments of truly wondering whether this would have a happy ending for Roan and Hazel, and Ms Winters did such a believable job of bringing these two people through hell and back. I cried some seriously ugly tears during parts, and I honestly can't remember the last book to do that to me. Roan, oh Roan...he broke my heart. I loved him and I hated him and then loved him all over again. Read it, seriously. If you love a good tortured hero, then you will adore this book. Pepper Winters has a ridiculous level of talent, and I'm in awe of how deeply she delves into her characters. There are not enough stars, seriously.
