Detached by Wendy Weiss tells the story of a father's desperate attempts to obtain medication for his daughter who is dying of cancer. Jason has failed in his chosen profession and now works as a medical director for an insurance company. He and his wife, Donna, dote on their beautiful daughter, Hanna, although their own relationship is in trouble. Both try to carry on as best they can as Hanna's condition worsens. Jason hears of a new drug that has a good success rate for the treatment of cancer but is only approved for use with adults. So he begins his frantic quest to obtain the drug for his daughter, a quest that involves kidnap, blackmail, deception and ultimately results in loss of life. But then, won't a parent do anything to save their dying child?
This is a debut novel by Wendy Weiss, but it is expertly written, full of unexpected twists and turns, and is a totally compelling read. The plot is clever and I had no idea how it would end until the very last page, so well accomplished is the writing. The characters are believable and the story line totally plausible. There were no questions left unanswered, which resulted in a satisfying and complete reading experience. The author was able to build tension and introduce the unexpected. Whilst a complex storyline, all sat well with a perfect arc, a good and clear timeline, and smooth and creative writing. The short chapters also helped to move the story along at a great pace. This is a memorable read and no doubt Wendy Weiss will be an author to watch in the future.
