How is it that text can be set perfectly and yet look insufferably dull? How do you achieve perfect congruence between the type itself and its meaning? In Detail in Typography Jost Hochuli, master book designer and author of the seminal Designing Books, addresses the finer points of setting text. Hochuli begins with a consideration of how human beings read, moving on incrementally to considerations of letter, word, and line as well as word-space and line-space. Hochuli concludes by examining whole paragraphs and how they carry meaning. Produced in Switzerland to the highest standards, Detail in Typography embodies critical thinking and articulate design in its own physical form.

This is a relatively small book, but it packs a lot into a short space. It is "authoritative" in that it does not provide reasons or explanations for the typographic suggestions it makes. So look for a longer, more analytical work if you need explanations. This is a handy reference that shows the minimums needed to set good looking type. It is a handy reference to keep nearby when looking at typesetting projects that offer challenges. Using this booklet, you have an additional tool to help get well crafted type.

This little book (about the size of a trade paperback) has about 60 pages of content.
I assume its $22 price tag is due to a very small print run, which pushed up the unit cost.
I think the book has value and does include many important details that help define the difference between OK and professional typography. But the ratio of content to price is a little out of whack.

Far less comprehensive than Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographic Style," but a good summary of the basics.

The best for type nerds. Small and short which I like to carry around as a handbook for referencing.

Great supplement to Robert Bringhurst's "Elements of Typographic Style." Goes into more detail (obviously) of kerning, ligatures, etc…Helpful for all levels of designers.

This book is easily the most important book I've read this year, I cherish the knowledge contained in these pages and will follow these lessons until the day I die.

Testo imperdibile
Reviewed in Italy on May 10, 2020Verified Purchase
Questo testo non è una introduzione all'arte della tipografia, ma, come chiaramente affermato nel titolo, un'analisi di come dettagli anche minimi possano avere un impatto enorme sulla resa visiva e sulla fruibilità di un testo stampato.
