Review

Ken is missing! Children help Barbie solve this not-so-exciting mystery by exploring secret passageways, interviewing witnesses and using an onscreen magnifying glass to uncover 50 randomized clues. Personalized detective badges can be printed and Barbie addresses players by name. Testers were unanimously unenthusiastic about the game due to some serious design flaws. After scouring screen after screen, kids never did find the clues. The fact that Barbie was hard to manipulate didn't help matters- in fact, poor Babs kept walking into walls. Our testers gave up before they reached the program's conclusion. In fact, several families reported that after a few days of trying their kids simply gave up, never going back to the program again. The sequel to this CD, Detective Barbie 2 CD-ROM, The Vacation Mystery, is a real improvement!

This game has transcended the years. Having played it as a little girl, and now as a mature young woman, I cannot rave enough about this fantastic piece of art. The characters fly off the screen, straight out of a Shakespearean tragedy. Even now in 2014, 16 years after its conception from the god-like hands of Mattel, the graphics are ahead of its time. Eat our sparkly pink dust, Halo. It can never amount to the sheer hours of joy I have spent playing this game. From the diversity of name options, allowing me to play with my best friend, Yamakannie, to the majestic chase of a truly terrifying criminal. There is no better game to buy for your daughter, your son, your mother, your great-great uncle, your neighbor next door, or even the scariest of lizard monsters. As long as you have windows 95' or above, you will be able to enjoy this classic masterpiece.

My adoptive sister and I are 14 and 15 and found this game which used to frustrate us like crazy, so we decided to try to beat it. After about 35 minutes of tedious play, we gave up. This game is so hard!! Also, Barbie moves at the speed of a 90 year old turtle. We had to google how to beat this game because we were so annoyed. I have no idea how in the world a 5 year old could play this game. I would not recommend this game to my worst enemy. The graphics are terrible to top it all off. So is the music. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

I don't have this game but my cousin does, she has sooo many babie comp games but this one was one of the best. Coming from a 13 year old who isn't really into barbies, this was a cool game. It gets exciting when you find clues leading you to different clues..but it really gets exciting when you see the shadow figure! In the game you can do alot of things... also it is cool when barbie uses your name when she askes you something. All in all this was a good game!

I love that this game has multiple endings with different culprits!
It was fun to find clues, question suspects, and do all the mini-games.
This game was even scary for me as a kid, haha! XD When the creep would peer out of the Tunnel of Love, I got goosebumps! :) This game was so much fun, and holds so many great memories.

Anyone who says the graphics suck must not realize that this game is from 19-freaking-88. As a 6-year-old in 1999, I certainly didn't think they sucked.

I remembered stealing this game from my little sister when I was a kid in the late 90's and decided to relive a fond childhood memory and buy a copy for myself. So the story goes Barbie and Becky have recently graduated from Detective Academy in which at the same time Ken goes missing at a charity carnival during a magic act, it is up to you and Barbie to find Ken and catch the culprit behind Ken's disappearance.

The graphics were pretty interesting when this game came out in the colorful carnival setting, a lot of the game is 3D rendered which makes the game look better but is consequently less interactive. The controls are a bit of a problem as Barbie moves at her now famous turtle-like pace which makes the progression of the game move a lot slower than it could have. You complete the game by using a magnifying glass and pulling it over clues and following the clues to the subsequent area until the game is completed.

There are also mini games and rides that are part of the main story where you chase the suspect on a carnival slide, jet-skis, bumper cars, a carousel, and a roller coaster. The game makes things a bit more interesting by changing the suspect each time you play so there is some replay value to it. The games biggest side feature is Barbie's ability to address the player by his or her name from a list of more than 50,000 names, automated but cool. Recommended for kids and adults of all ages.
