Issue 1027 features 12 stories from some writers I enjoy, some I don’t enjoy and some I have no opinion about. “Blowback” by Peter J Tomasi was fine. Most of the story was spent on short mentions of his various villains and we get a little bit of a hook ending. It’s a story that I’ll forget all about in a few days but it was ok. I can’t stand the writing of Brian Michael Bendis, but I thought “The Master Class” was decent. It was a bit too wordy and BMB’s dialogue is almost always tedious but overall, it was not bad.
I really enjoyed Matt Fraction’s work on Jimmy Olsen, so I was looking forward to his story and “Many Happy Returns” didn’t disappoint. I will definitely be following Fraction to whatever his next DC project is. Although I don’t necessarily have an issue with Greg Rucka, I thought his Lois Lane maxi-series was horrendous. “Rookie” was another fine story and I can respect him for writing a Detective Comic story that BARELY features Batman.
“Odyssey” by Marv Wolfman plays like the first part of a story but I guess that’s all there is. Pretty unmemorable. I did like the retro artwork by Emanuela Lupacchino. “Detective #26” by Grant Morrison was awesome. If Morrison is really is done at DC, I’m going to miss his work tremendously. Tom King has a great track record with these compilation issues, and I love the concept he comes up with, but he really works to stretch it out over 12 pages. I’m sure there was an editorial mandate on the number of pages and this one didn’t need to be so long.
Despite his long record of commercial success, I am NOT a Scott Snyder fan and although his story had a very interesting premise it faceplants the ending. “Generations Fractured” by Dan Jurgens is intriguing, but it’s just a lead-in to Generations: Future State #1 which I’m not planning on picking up. Mariko Tamaki’s story didn’t really do anything for me and “A Gift” is another case where it’s a lead-in to another comic. I may have to reread some of these stories because I might have missed an important detail or two that could change my opinion.
All in all, I think this is a great deal for 144 pages of new material. There is some wonderful artwork and despite a few clunker stories it’s mostly good to excellent stuff.
