Very good book, can be read as a stand alone but if you havent started reading the other books in this series yet i suggets reading this first or after "soul summoner" as it is detective McNamara's back story. I wont go into detail as i dont like giving away possible spoilers. But its a good read and if you liked soul summoner you'll love this.

This book written by Elicia Hyder is a good book. It tells about the Detective kind of a pre-story to The Soul Summoner. I gave it 5 stars cause the aurthor brings you into her stories and she makes me feel like I'm in her stories but without a name. I feel like I'm there but I'm not there! I've read all of her books and I'm now reading the one that just got published "The Siren"!

I freely chose to review this ARC from an author unknown to me and OH NO SHE DIDN'T leave me hanging! What a fast moving and action packed book that had me riveted to my seat, and it's only book one! Detective Nathan McNamara was on the case of eleven missing your girls all over North Carolina, and he was nowhere close to much needed answers. To top it off, he had to overlap with burglaries and was working 72 hours! Then a one night stand wouldn't take the hint and kept popping up to distract him. When burglary turned to murder, he knew he had to search harder to get the scum off the street fast!

Fans of Elicia Hyder (and boy am I after 3 straight wins!!) will not be disappointed in this novel which takes place before and leading up to The Soul Summoner but stands up on its own. Here you get an intimate look at how Nathan and Shannon get started up together and what Nathan and his family have to say about it all. This book had me laughing and feeling like one of the family as I tried to figure out the twists of robbery and murder with the lovable and hunky Nathan who is truly a star here. You'll find a bit of mystery, romance, laughter and love but not a trace of regret for missing sleep! This author is not one to watch, she's one to run to.

This is the prequel (novella) to THE SOUL SUMMONER series. Although a part of a series, this is a stand alone.

Detective Nathan McNamara has his hands full. His latest one night stand is becoming anything but. Just his luck, he picked up on Shannon .. who works for a news station.

While trying to dodge her attentions, he's working a string of burglary cases. But when the robbers find a young girl in their latest target, they don't hesitate to kill her.

With his lieutenant screaming for the cases to be solved and with nothing that links the houses, he's beside himself. Having a 'girlfriend' who's wanting a commitment and a mother who's already planning a wedding and he thinks a whiskey bottle might be a very good idea.
In his off time, he's linked 11 missing women to a single perpetrator. And he has a special link to one of them.

McNamara is a great character. He's funny, serious, dedicated, and undeniably a player. I love how he interacts with Shannon, and his mother is a hoot!

The first book in this series is THE SOUL SUMMONER. It is a full length novel that continues with his hunt for a possible serial killer.
I am so looking forward to reading the entire series.

This short prequel to The Soul Summoner series fills in a lot of background information on Detective Nathan Macnamara in an entertaining story.
I have to say, at first, even knowing the character from the other books, I didn’t find myself warming to him because of his attitude to his one night stand. It might be realistic, but I was not impressed by him until he actually started to look at Shannon as a human being, rather than an intrusive irritation. Once he did, the story rolled along really nicely, and Nathan became an ever more sympathetic character.
The plot, which includes the thread leading into the rest of the series, works well as a police procedural, with none of the supernatural elements of later books. The robbery and murder thread is tied up well, and we see Nate’s natural heroism at work.
My only other issue was that the book is written for an American audience (I’m British), and the section about a certain sporting event (I’m not even sure which sport it was) left me clueless. It didn’t spoil my understanding of the characters attitudes and reactions, I just didn’t know what it was all about.
I listened to the audio book and I would happily give a 5* rating for the narrator – his ability to produce a variation of voices of both sexes was awesome, so I was never left in any doubt as to who was speaking. There were a couple of phrases near the beginning where he sounded slightly uncomfortable, but that could have been me, not him.
If you are already a fan of this series, I highly recommend this as either a book or an audio book, and if you haven’t read the series, you could do well to start with this one, on the understanding that weird stuff will start to happen as you get beyond this volume.

The cover lends to a hardcore Dectective story but I was somewhat surprised as this story was totally from the H POV and his thoughts and actions were somewhat comical and light which totally contrasted to my view going in. The story is really well told, you are carried through his daily life and the people in it, those who are an a.. Donkey and those who scare the heck out of him (namely Shannon and his Mom).
This book is totally about Nate and introduces you to his world, his family, fears and obsessions trying to find a serial killer (this on his own time) and then a chain of burglaries distracts and we ride along to catch these guys.
I like Nate he seems a typical clueless male, when it comes to women, he is sweet and has a great family life so lends to you relaxing and liking him more and more. I also like Shannon, she cracks me up with the emotions she generates in Nate and how she is a chick who knows what and who she wants but is not bold but uses her wiles and woos Nate. Poor guy he doesn't know what hits him most of the time... Typical male.... Lol!

My only complaint is that it is a running series and feels cliff hanger-ish at the end (which I hate), as you have to wait for the next book to follow through with the characters' journey.
I read some of the other reviews and agree that while this is a prequel and basically serves to intro the characters it hits the mark on good writing, character development and it does pull you in and yeah I guess the reason for my complaint of waiting for the next one stems from liking the book and wanting to see it through ... Now!! Not a piece at a time.

Ms Hyder I will keep my eye out for your books as I like your humor and style, soft and leading but not brash and bold, and while I normally enjoy a bit more spice in my books it was not necessary and I didn't miss it.
