About the Author

Michael Angel's worlds of fiction range from the unicorn-ruled realm of the Morning Land to the gritty 'Fringe Space' of the western Galactic Frontier. Author of the bestselling Centaur of the Crime - where C.S. Lewis meets CSI - his books populate shelves in languages from Russian to Portuguese.

He currently resides in Southern California. Alas, despite keeping a keen eye out for griffins, centaurs, or pegasi, none have yet put in an appearance on Hollywood Boulevard.

Michael Angel's welcome mat is out at his website, so feel free to visit: michaelangelwriter.com.

“To die, to sleep –
To sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there’s the rub,
For in this sleep of death what dreams may come…”
― William Shakespeare, Hamlet

I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. – Maya Angelou
____________
unicornThe photo of a snow-white Pegasus in the company of the President of the United States had made the front page of the Los Angeles Times twice now. Both times this happened, someone close to me has been killed.

Derek Ridder knows about death. About loss, and pain, true. But most of all, he knows about Death. A Los Angeles cop, he sees humanity at it’s very worst; it’s darkest, cruelest moments. Three years ago, he saw that front page photo only moments before his beloved wife, Beth, died – the victim of a suicide who decided to take many with him when he parked in the path of an oncoming train. And the second time.

The second time nearly drove him mad.

Now, Derek Ridder’s life has been turned upside down, his niece and sister-in-law threatened, and the very fate of our world, The Other World as it is called by those who populate the dimension which has paralleled and overlapped our own, may come down to whether or not Derek, and those who help him, can find the key to destroying a man – a man who is also a Monster.

It is called The Morning Land. A land of pegasi and unicorn, of dryads and wizards and all manner of things that go bump in the night. And in this land, a wizard has gone mad, threatening our world, and his, with total annihilation at the teeth and claws of a demon horde.

He had dead, doll’s eyes, like a sharks.

I love detective novels, and fantasy novels, and urban fantasy as well. This book dishes up a great genre-busting combo of the three. Imagine a mash-up of Jim Butcher and Anne McCaffrey, with a light dusting of S.J. Rozan for seasoning. You get the protagonist with a past, the unexpected appearance of the supernatural, and a satisfying villain, all tucked into the structure of a procedural.

The novel is a quick and entertaining read, with believable and heartening character development. The plot moves the story along at a steady clip (well really, a steady clip-clop).

This is not a book for those who love gritty and realistic hyperbolic violence. But for those of us who like to sleep at night without horrible pictures in our heads, the novel provides enough tension and conflict to satisfy. And if you happen to enjoy a dusting of romance, all the better.

It's a great beach read -- just remember the sunscreen, because you will be on the towel, turning pages, for the whole afternoon.

I'm not sure how I lost track of this book, but as I constantly upload new books, sometimes the ones I am reading slip several pages deeper into the kindle. I'm sorry. I was given this book by the author after I had read and loved a couple of his other novels and I really did enjoy this one as well, once I found it again.

This is a mystery, a detective story with a magical twist, and a love story most of all. Derek Ridder is a good guy, and has not one but two worlds to save. He also has a niece who sees him as the hero he can be. The problem is, he sees himself through eyes clouded by the grief of having failed to save the woman he loved from a suicidal man who used her train as his method of suicide.

It will take facing a really evil crazy man, finding an impossible new love, learning magic and making a huge and unexpected sacrifice before you reach the end of this story, but even if, like me, it takes you over a year to get to the end, it will have been worth it. For those who love wizards and fairies and unicorns and good versus evil, cute baby Pegasus added as a bonus.

Three years ago, when Morning Land was discovered, Detective Derek Ridder didn't pay much attention. Wallowing in grief over the death of his wife, this hardnosed detective cared nothing about the colorful creatures of ancient lore--until he discovered his own latent magic. Now confronted with his own latent powers he neither understands nor accepts, he must decide whether to use those powers against creatures of evil who threaten to rob him of the ones he loves--and the world he cares deeply about.

He finally realizes those enemies cannot be defeated in his own world, and plunges reluctantly into the Morning Land to fight the warlock Teach and his pack of fanged yena with their own weapons on their own ground. But Morning Land is filled with unicorns, dryads, and other exotic creatures--who might be friend or foe--depending of Derek's ability to master their exotic cultural rules and rituals.

The battle rages between worlds and among races, making a story that you won't be able to put down until the final clash--and won't be able to forget for many a long night.

Michael Angel is an author who knows exactly what he is doing when he takes you down the path that leads out of this world.

Detective and The Unicorn is part detective story, part fantasy, but at its heart it's a love story about kindred spirits. It balances a fine line between fantasy and reality without throwing out the doctrine of Suspension of Disbelief. You've just got to love explosive-rune throwing unicorns and previously stationary tree elementals who've figured out that a Diesel engine truck can move their trees and potted soil.

The magic system is slight and could have used more explanation, but stands on its own.

The blending of worlds makes for interesting cross overs between technology and magic.

But its the love story on this one, its the idea that through great loss can come great strength. The author touches on something here, something universal to beings everywhere because spirits can fall in love too.

I found myself looking forward to the next reading period. And the next book!
