Editorial Reviews

Theres a murderer on the moors. Terror on the train. Villains in the village! Only the worlds greatest deductive minds can save the day. Fortunately, Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christies Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple are together, for the first time ever, to confront their most confounding cases in the GREAT DETECTIVES ANTHOLOGY.

Literatures greatest sleuths are brought to life by the actors born to play the roles. As portrayed by Peter Cushing, the definitive Sherlock Holmes exercises his legendary deductive skills in five classic BBC productions, including The Hound of the Baskervilles, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. Meanwhile, Dame Agathas diminutive detective, Hercule Poirot, portrayed with fastidious elegance by the inimitable David Suchet, applies his little grey cells to ferret out the cause of a Death on the Nile and solve the Mystery of the Blue Train, among other Christie classics. Rounding out the trio, Joan Hickson received an Order of the British Empire for her portrayal of the brilliant spinster Miss Jane Marple, who is here to untangle the riddles of the Murder at the Vicarage, The Mirror Crackd from Side to Side and many more.

THE GREAT DETECTIVES ANTHOLOGY includes 18 classic capers.

What can you see about the portrayals of these classic sleuths? David Suchet as Poirot can never be matched or topped. He is Poirot. It is a part he was born to play and the episodes chosen here are a great example of his work and Agatha Christie's stories of Poirot. The same can be said about Miss Marple played by Joan Hickson. Many actresses have played her,but this is the ONE. She is the actress and this is the part that got me watching Miss Marple on PBS back in the 80's and she is Miss Marple in my head to perfection. Both Miss Hickson and Mr. Suchet can not be topped for these roles.
Sherlock Holmes portrayed by Mr. Cushing is pretty good, these are the tv versions from I believe the 70's and don't have the quality of the other 2 sleuths. Not to berate Mr. Cushing he is an excellent actor, but to me he is always Dr. Von Helsing or Dr. Frankenstein. I can give the 2nd best rating as Sherlock and since I am a Sherlock collector that is very high. Buy this set if you are starting out on these sleuths,if you are reliving watching them years ago or if you just want a sample set to give as a gift. For the price well worth it.

David Suchet's poortrail of Poirot is best I've seen. My wife concurs. I prefer Joan Hickson as Miss Marple my wife likes the other two doing her now, there names escape me now,no slight in tended. Peter Cushing's poortrail of Holmes is very good.

I am a great fan of Ms Marple (Joan Hickson), as well as watching Hercule Poirot.. and I thought this contained Jeremy Brett as the Great Sherlock Holmes. Alas. I watched all the Ms Marple episodes first. Well worth it. I love Ms. Marple, the actress, the stories, the writing.. everything about them. I'd love to imagine my granny with that vim and vigour investigating mysteries like this.

Poirot.. usually I am a big fun, but it seems the ones they chosen were not the best AND were the ones where they changed the story/ending. Bad bad bad. I'm a fan of true to the novel, not updated to whatever is current to today's day and age. Acting is still good, I do always enjoy David Suchet.

And last.. and most certainly least.. gag.. when I realized this wasn't Jeremy Brett.. I then decided to watch everything first and having left me to these as last. I'm a massive fan of both Jeremy Brett in Granada's Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series) and Benedict Cumberbatch, in BBC's latest Sherlock (Sherlock: Season One). I'm sure in it's period, this perhaps was good. I was expecting a movie, even a tv show.. no no. It looks like a staged theatre drama on film. I'm sure Peter Cushing was a great actor, but the way this was shot and filmed.. is badly dated. And just bad. Watson (in like some other series) is the comedy relief. And he seems old and dense. Everyone seems to be over acting. I'm watching the first episode.. and it will be my last. I would only watch this again for comedic relief.. doing something else..

In my opinion the best series interpretations of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. The more modern versions have a great deal of flashy nonsense and do not stick to the intrinsic mystery and also, modern versions minimalize the tragedy of murder or the danger of tracking a murderer. Here in Caribbean Mystery we see Victoria, the maid, her mother, and her village. Agatha Christie helped to pick Joan Dickson for the role of Miss Marple. Joan Dickson is true to the character who is more subdued and less outgoing than later actors' interpretations. For another point, Victoria's funeral shows the whole extended family, including children.Later versions emphasize conflict with historical colonial authority and are almost prurient. Great performances by all lead actors. etc.

I think this set is missing They Do It with Mirrors. The original Miss Marple boxed set has nine episodes. This appears to have only eight. Great price though. Joan Hickson is my favorite Miss Marple.

I haven't yet seen all the programs since this anthology has so many, but I'm looking forward to watching them all. I love having it in my video library so I can turn to these great stories and performances whenever I wish. Of course, our Miss Marple is so wonderful and I still miss her. She was the greatest (although Poirot would argue that - Ha!) Thanks much.

The anthology arrived quickly. I've already seen most of the mysteries already however I love having them in my DVD library. On those few days when I'd like the world to go away there is nothing nicer than a much loved movie and a nice cup of tea. Love all of them and the price is incredibly cheap. Thank you, jenny.
