Editorial Reviews

Cyndi Lauper s celebrated musical journey takes an unexpected southern turn on DETOUR, her 11th studio album, which finds the Grammy®, Emmy® and Tony®-winning singer-songwriter putting her signature spin on a dozen classic country songs.

DETOUR showcases Lauper s unmistakable voice on country classics from the 40s, 50s and 60s and features guest appearances from county music stars Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, and Willie Nelson. Lauper recorded the album in Nashville alongside a band comprised of the city s top session players.

The album is Lauper s first for Sire Records and executive produced by legendary Sire founder, Seymour Stein.

I have been an ardent fan of Cyndi Lauper's quirky, gorgeous vocals since her debut solo album in 1983. In recent years, she has veered away from songwriting to experiment with traditional material, including--so far--torch songs and Blues. On this superb collection, released today, she surprises, however, for this time out we find the erstwhile new wave rocker from Queens crooning pure country, covering classic sides culled from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Country is a genre about which I will admit I know very little. However, to my surprise, Lauper's voice is perfectly suited to this material. The album, featuring guest appearances from Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Jewel, and Alison Krauss, is a delight from first twangy note to last, and is very highly recommended indeed.

Just finished listening to my instant download of the album while I patiently await the arrival of the CD and vinyl (which I can't wait to spin!!).

All I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!! This album is just incredible. Cyndi really can do anything and this album proves that. It's got just enough of that bluesy feel to keep the production hip. There's a touch of rockabilly which harkens back to her early days with Blue Angel and Cyndi is in absolute perfect voice. Then there are all those glorious classic country sounds that take you right back to the heyday of the Grand Ole Opry.

Things start off really nicely with Funnel Of Love, but the party really gets going with track number 2, Detour. It's so great to hear Cyndi on record with Emmylou. Miss Patti Page would really be proud of this one.

Misty Blue is the powerhouse standout. This track is just amazing. I will go ahead and go on record that this is one of Cyndi's best vocals ever.

Heartaches By The Number and The End Of The World are also major standouts. You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly with Vince Gill is so much fun.

Begging To You is also a really great track, which I was not as familiar with. She really conveys heartache so well on this one and really throughout the entire album.

This will be one that I revisit very often. This album, along with Memphis Blues, has put Cyndi into a whole new realm far and above her peers who started out with her in the 80's.

One could say that Cyndi Laupers new album "Detour" is yet another in a long line of albums by rock/pop stars who are turning to country to score a hit. You could say that, but that's not the case here. With "Detour" Cyndi is adding to her string of cover albums in genres that have inspired her. Prior to this she did "At Last" which was mostly 50's-60's pop and "Memphis Blues" which was a blues album. So this is right in line with what she's been doing as of late. Pauper can wrap her vocals around pretty much any type of song and sell it. With "Detour" she is doing pretty much straight forward covers of primarily 50's and 60's country songs. A couple of the tracks don't really fit this time line, "Funnel Of Love" is a cover of the 1961 Wanda Jackson pop b-side to her country single "Right Or Wrong". My mom had this 45 and I discovered the record when I was little and have "Funnel Of Love" ever since. Another that doesn't fit is "Hard Candy Christmas" which is actually from the 1970's musical "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" but best known by, and included here because of, Dolly Parton's 1982 remake.
Most of the tracks work really well in particular the pair of Patsy Clone covers and Skeeter Davis's "The End Of The World". There are two really corny covers. The first, and better of the two, is the Loretta Lynn/Conway Twitty novelty hit "You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly". Done here as a duet with Vince Gill. Like the original it contains ad libbed banter between the two as the song closes. The worst of the album though is the cover of the Patsy Montana chestnut "I Want To Be A Cowboys Sweetheart". The whole song just doesn't quite work for me. It features Jewel yodeling.

I am a huge fan of Cyndi Lauper's Classic 80's music and style. I was a kid back when those albums came out, and I love them even more now. I didn't follow Ms. Lauper through the years, and this is her first post 1980's album I've bought. I must admit that I didn't have great expectations. The only reason I bought it was a mix of Facebook advertising, nostalgia, and the fact that I'm a fan of old-school country and western music. I just got the album tonight, and I absolutely love it. This album will easily be a part of my standard rotation and in my opinion fits right in with Cyndi's classics. Highly recommended if you enjoy country music and/or are a die-hard Lauper fan.

Cyndi Lauper doing a Country Album?? ... Is this a JOKE? ... NO, it isn't! And WHY NOT? ... Let us not forget that Cyndi started her career with the group, "The Blue Angels" (A Rock-a-Billy group from the early 1980s). Rock-a-Billy is Country/Rock n Roll Music, so the fact that Cyndi can do Country, was NO SURPRISE to me! ... Cyndi can do ANYTHING! She is SUCH A TALENTED SINGER, who was so UNDER rated back in the day! ... She deserved to be a BIGGER STAR than she was given credit for. This said, she is STILL AROUND, and pouring out GREAT MUSIC!
Although she has put her OWN style in these remakes, I must say, as always, she did the original songs JUSTICE! In her rendition of "Misty Blue", you can tell Brenda Lee MUST have been an influence on Cyndi Lauper. The similarities in their voices is there, and VERY OBVIOUS!
"Heartaches By the Numbers" is my FAVORITE TRACK! .... Cyndi really COUNTRY ROCKED IT! .... A FEMALE VERSION of ELVIS PRESLEY! :)
I would have given this Album 5 Stars, if not for the following:
1. I was not crazy about the selection of songs she used for her duets, especially the Willie Nelson song. Felt there are MUCH BETTER Country songs she could have done. "I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" sounded like something Lucy and Ethel from "I Love Lucy" would do! ... In fact, it made think of them!
2. Although her version of "Hard Candy Christmas" was good, I never felt this song was a Country song, and if she was going to do a Dolly Parton song, I wished she would have picked something else.
3. Lastly, 12 tracks was NOT ENOUGH ... Wished this Album had more tracks and a better selection of Classic Country songs. Who knows? Maybe a FOLLOW UP ALBUM of Country Music is in the works??
