With training and practice in Nutritional Science, Alex Newell's approach makes you feel you're in the good hands of a trusted, reliable professional. You can tell he "walks his talk", as he shares his personal and professional Detox experiences.
The emphasis is on balanced, trustworthy, and realistic advice, rather than extremes and quick-fixes.
The Author demystifies the process, takes out the guesswork, and presents many options from which you can then choose to suit your own preferences, beliefs and lifestyle. The steps are laid-out in a simple, caring way, emphasizing "preparation", and not just jumping straight in for a quick-fix... hence the 3 Steps.
This book is an informative read, starting with detox 101, accentuating health benefits throughout - so much more than just detox, but also nutritional eating essentials, and highlighting the importance of Super Foods. It inspires you to be healthier - not just desire it, but get motivated to get up off your butt and do it!
While the 3 Steps are laid-out clearly, I would really like to have seen a table or chart that summarized the steps in quick reference overview glance.
This book lives up to its promise. As the Author says:
"I promise you that the recommendations in this book are my best efforts to use the best and up to date scientific understanding of Detox and nutrition added to the best techniques from traditional Naturopathy."
If you're interested in Detoxing for Health, in an informed and balanced way, this is the way to do it...
What I enjoyed about this flexible approach is that it is more pragmatic than most. Although Dr. Newell does cover what I consider some extreme restriction to eliminate dietary toxins (like sugar and meat), he also recognizes that not everyone will be willing to go that far, and leaves it up to the reader to what degree they wish to go.
Dr. Newell explains why drinking lots of water and going on a "detox diet" is not good enough, as added nutrients and "detox techniques" are also needed. He offers an extensive list of "superfoods" to indulge in (with detailed explanations of why these foods are extra healthy), nutritional supplements (the best ones out there, what each one does, and how to determine the correct doses), and a variety of techniques (with tricks and tips he's learned over the years from personal and professional experience, including step-by-step instructions, as well as cautions to watch for).
The focus is less on diet and more on detox formulas (including vitamins, minerals, nutritional supplements, herbs, and amino acids), and detox techniques (many of which I was completely unfamiliar). He also gives the reader many options, such as whether to do a full body cleanse or just specific organs, like the colon, liver, or kidneys, all of which have significant functions in detoxifying the body. Other options include the length of the detox, and various products (with brand names and links to websites for further details and where they can be obtained) and detox kits, going through all the pros and cons. The end of the book conveniently contains links and resources by chapter.
