This book just isn't that great. I never like bad reviews that don't give
details, so here goes: I've been in business for a year, doing well, and learned
the basics from a previous book. I bought this one, too, because I thought there
might be other information.

The author didn't explain how to price products, just said to "include
everything." Then she says to use a cake matrix which she doesn't explain
further. But go to her website and for a hefty monthly membership fee she
provides it. Smells like a scam.

And the only thing she says about bookkeeping is to find a software program.
Good thing I already bought another book. That's how I learned to set up my
business books.

Also the author, a supposed expert, says don't do wholesale. That's unsound
advice and can cost you business. Most of my business is wholesale.

On the plus side, the interviews with home-based bakers are okay and probably
help to sell books to their friends and family. But interviews are for websites
and magazines, not in a book I paid for.

This book was just what I was looking for. I have been researching starting a home based bakery for a few months now and this book really helped me. It brought up things that I did not think about and elaborated on things I had questions about. But I would suggest reading, as a companion book from the same series, HOW TO START A HOME BASED BUSINESS by Bert Holtje & Susan Shelly. It is the more technical side of starting any home based business. The two together are the perfect combination.

There isn't much here worth reading. The author makes some common sense observations but leaves out anything of substance. I expected some details about marketing, business plans, determining costs, evaluating ingredients and instead I got fluff about working around your kids schedule and chocolate cookie recipes.

The book doesnt offer much that's not already obvious, and sometimes contradictory. For example, after repeatedly emphasizing how important it is to use your unique recipes (including encouragement to create your own), she then offers 20 pages of her best recipes. Uh, thanks for these, but seriously?!

Here's an example of how "helpful" the info is. under the heading "how to set up PayPal", here are the instructions (in their entirety)--"Please read thorugh the PayPal information ([...] Setting up your PayPal account is not difficult and can be done completely online. The secure online portal provides a demonstration that walks you through creating your account, making it easy for customers to pay for your products and services."

THis book had no better/more info than is easily obtainable online (just google "home based bakery").

This book is full of information but it is not very positive. We all understand that opening a home business requires a lot of work. The author really pushes this point and is a little discouraging to the reader.
