How does the church expound the Christian faith in contemporary times, while simultaneously remaining faithful to the ancient apostolic treasury? What with all of the lessons and blemishes of history, the advances in the sciences and philosophy, the probative questions of theology, and the changes in culture and social mores, is it possible, or even desirable, to proclaim the same gospel in America in 2013 that was preached in Alexandria in 213?

For Thomas Guarino, author and theologian, the answer is a resounding "yes." In this book he draws chiefly upon the post-Nicene text, the Commonitorium, by Saint Vincent of Lerins (+ 445), as well as on the much later Victorian-era writings of Cardinal John Henry Newman. What he proffers from both men is their understanding of the legitimate development, over time and across cultures, of Christian doctrine.

Both Vincent and Newman agree that, with the passage of time, doctrine can and should be recapitulated, re-conceptualized, or even amplified. That is to say, it can be developed, or evolve, so long as the modifications maintain congruity with the essence of the apostolic faith. A new formulation of the faith, however, that is both inconsistent and inimical at its root to the ancient deposit of faith is to be rejected as an illegitimate corruption.

Thomas Guarino reminds us of this theological postulation for two reasons. The first is for ecumenical advancement. He mildly challenges the fractured Christian Church to reexamine its various theologies and practices in light of the Lerinian axiom; that the true faith is that which has been believed "always, everywhere, and by everyone.

I was first introduced to Vincent of Lérins while reading Thomas Oden’s The Rebirth of Orthodoxy. It was with great approval that Oden spoke of the so-called Vincentian Canon, which famously states, “We hold that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, and by everyone.” Though my first acquaintance with St. Vincent came with a sympathetic commentary, elsewhere I found that his canon had received little respect. Many quipped that if ubiquity were a rule for doctrine, than we would have no doctrine. However, these opposing appraisals of St. Vincent only aroused my curiosity. Thus, I am extremely grateful to Baker Academic for graciously sending me a review copy of Thomas Guarino’s Vincent of Lérins and the Development of Christian Doctrine.

Guarino’s volume is the second publication in Baker Academic’s budding series, Foundations of the Theological Exegesis and Christian Spirituality. Any Christian with an ecumenical heartstring ought to warmly welcome this series. Its expressed intentions are to further the Patristic ressourcement in order to promote Christian unity. I have little doubt that where the Church Fathers are appreciated, ecumenism will abound. Thus, I truly hope this series gains wide readership.

Guarino’s own contribution attempts to move beyond the modern caricature of St. Vincent as a lofty idealist and naïve traditionalist, in order to demonstrate the profoundly relevant and workable contribution St. Vincent can make toward our contemporary understanding of theological development. In Guarino’s view, Vincent of Lérins offers a compelling method for balancing the preservation of the apostolic tradition with the innovative development demanded by new circumstances. This balance is certainly one in need today.
