Oliver Crisp’s latest book, Deviant Calvinism: Broadening Reformed Theology, is an attempt to demonstrate that the Reformed tradition is much broader and wider than it is commonly characterized. His book succeeds in accomplishing this task. Indeed, I was eager to read this book because of my own theological history. I was once part of the young, restless, and Reformed crowd. Gradually, I grew out of my hyper-calvinism and into a gray area that was difficult for me to define. I thought perhaps I could (or should) no longer claim the title of “Reformed” … but I often found much of my theological inspiration from Reformed thinkers such as Barth. Crisp confirms my suspicions: Reformed theology is much broader than the neo-puritan calvinism that most people think of when they hear the title.

Reader be warned: this book is not for the faint of heart. It is a work of analytical theology and thus reads very philosophically. For one not familiar with reformed theological jargon or interested in “variant” strands of this tradition, it might be a difficult or tedious book to read. Crisp explores concepts such as eternal justification, libertarian calvinism, Augustinian universalism, and Barthian universalism. His focus is not so much on Scriptural warrant for doctrinal claims as it is on the logic which lies behind certain doctrinal claims – noting what truth claims a doctrine requires or denies. Much of the book revolves around a discussion of various ways one in the Reformed tradition might hold to the belief in universalism. Thus, it was a helpful addition to my current interest in the presence of universalism in evangelicalism.

I recommend this book as a thought-provoking read to all those who are invested in the Reformed tradition.

“If this volume goes some way toward readdressing that balance and challenging Reformed thinkers…it will have succeeded in the task for which its author sent it out into the world…a recognition that the themes it contains are not deviant forms of Calvinism after all.” (240)

Calvinism. Define it and Oliver Crisp will critique your definition. This is the rather presumptive thesis of Deviant Calvinism: Broadening Reformed Theology (henceforth Deviant Calvinism) and Oliver Crisp does a fantastic job. Though perhaps not in the way expected, Deviant Calvinism addresses the Reformed tradition from a framework bent toward “removing objections and arguments that are wide of their mark, [so that] those working on the doctrine of atonement today should have a clearer picture of where the real dogmatic lie” (215, spoken in the context of the “double-payment objection”). This results in a primarily philosophical and apophatic approach (proof through negative) against specific stigmas and “myths” of Reformed theology (1-11, 236-240).

This unique approach advantageously shows the Reformed tradition is not limited by the modern understanding of the tradition. However, Deviant Calvinism limits itself by consistently setting aside the Scriptural validity of discussed views (e.g. footnote 23 on pg 115, etc.) despite affirming the Scripture’s final authority (39). With this mindset, Deviant Calvinism addresses the themes of the atonement’s efficacy (chapters 5, 7 & 8) and universalism (chapters 4-6). However, before reaching these theological cornerstones, Crips address the relation of scripture and tradition to faith (chapter 1) as well as the theological theory of eternal justification (chapter 2).Read more ›

Crisp has written a great book on the diversity of the reformed heritage and faith. If you are stuck believing that "reformed theology," is narrow and thin, this book is for you. Read it. Great insights and well worth the price.

The anti-Calvinist blogs will never stop spinning the same message - Calvinism as a system is cruel, it creates a monster God, its fatalistic, and it is pessimistic (just to name a few "characteristics" of Calvinism). Roger Olson, a proponent of anti-Calvinism (who sort of reminds me of hard-nosed pro-Calvinist fundamentalists) has said that,

"If Calvinism is true, God is the author of sin, evil, innocent suffering and hell. That is to say, if Calvinism is true God is not all-loving and perfectly good."

These anti-Calvinists seem to forget that Calvinism or better yet, the Reformed tradition, is a lot broader and more varied than it is often portrayed. At least Oliver Crisp seems to think so.

In Deviant Calvinism, Crisp argues that Calvinism really is a confessional tradition, however it is a confessionalism that tolerates doctrinal plurality within certain parameters. In this new book he aims to,

"Commend to those within and without the ambit of the Reformed community way of looking at several central and defining doctrines of Calvinistic theology and broaden out what is regarded as appropriately Reformed doctrine."

Crisp acknowledges the fact that some myths about Calvinism just don't seem to go away (no thanks to some in the neo-Puritan camp, Crisp didn't say that, I did - Calvinism is so much bigger than just neo-Puritianism or being "Young, Restless, & Reformed"). For instance the myth that Reformed Christianity is anti-experiential, that it demands a doctrine of double predestination, that it is a theologically determinist system, that it denies human freedom, that atonement must be definite in scope, etc.Read more ›
