Survivors of the Joplin, Missouri tornado tell many stories in this book: of running for their lives, children torn from their mothers' arms, and being swept into the funnel of the hellish EF-5 tornado that on May 22, 2011, killed 158 people. Bonney Hogue Patterson was born and raised in a small town in southern Illinois. Her first book, Hunted in the Heartland, A Memoir of Murder, is set in the small town of Marion, Illinois, where a true crime drama literally sprang to life in her own neighborhood. The brutal murder of her neighbor, the police investigation and subsequent, haunting cold case status of a crime gone unsolved is part and parcel of her own life. Some thirty years later, a break in another case in neighboring Carbondale, Illinois led to a suspect already in the prison system. Reading a newspaper article, Mrs. Patterson recognized a picture, phoned police and became, once again, involved in the investigation of what turns out to be a deadly serial killer. Trying to understand what could have gone wrong in the initial investigation led to seeking answers from the case file itself,and the writing of the book.

Currently, the author lives in Missouri, in rural St. Charles County with her husband, Roger. She has two grown children and five grandchildren.

Amazing and inspirational to hear the stories from the children of Joplin who witnessed Heavenly intervention helping to save lives. The story of Mason & Lage about floored me. They could have only survived through a miracle. Also beautiful how Joplin incorporated the stories of angels and butterfly people with the mural and memorial. I highly recommend this book.

I remember the news coverage and later documentaries of the disaster. This book is an interesting follow-up to a well-covered, video rich story.
The four stars rating was a slip of the finger registered before I could correct it.

The tornado that struck Joplin Missouri was a horrible joke Mother Nature played on a beautiful, quiet town in the Midwest. The author did such a great job of researching all aspects of the tragedy from the development of the weather, the layout of the city, and especially the people, all the people. Bonney brought out all of the support, strength, generosity and love of all of the victims, survivors, first responders and everyone in the neighboring towns. It was a terrible tragedy but the author showed the strength and the warmth of the people who live and work in a town in Missouri in the Midwest.
