Benet wrote this a while back, but it's worth reading, particularly in view of some of the shenangians going on in the Monica affair. Stone sold his soul and lived a long and fruitful life, the devil not bothering him at all due to the promised eventual payoff.

Came time for the payoff, Jabez Stone hired the F. Lee Bailey of the time, silver toungued orator Daniel Webster. The jury was picked by the Devil, no voir dire there. And Webster started his talk. It's good reading today if you can find it.

I have searched hard for a Complete Works of Benet, prose and poetry. His ouevre is not so great that it should be difficult to do. There are many other good stories in there, Johnny Pye and the Fool Killer, By the Waters of Babylon, and poems, too, John Brown's Body of course, but How Hillbilly Jim Won The Georgia Fiddler's Contest, too, and a host of others. Benet is not an author to shove away on the back shelves and forget. He deserves to be read.

Great Short story I first read as a teenager. It won the O'henry award when it was published and was also made into a movie in the early 1940s.Moral of the story? Be carefull what you wish for and if you think youll out smart the Devil, think again. He's been around a long long time.In this story the Protagonist is lucky enough to have Daniel Webster as his Attorney in his case againt Satan. If your thinking about trading your soul for wealth,Fame or Vengence.Read this first and do your reasearch.A deal is a deal and he will enforce his contract wheather you like it or not.You may say to yourself ,Ill just get someone like Daniel Webster.Good luck, this is a fairy tale and a pretty good one.Check it out.The re-print is pretty cheap and I think Peguin Publishers still carrys it too.If your a fan of Tragedy's like Sophocles,Dickens or Shakespere you will like this. Easy read one night and done.

I am a 3rd year law student and my Products Liability Professor suggested this book and others to the class for reading material. "The Devil and Daniel Webster" raises the role of a great trial lawyer to a level that is larger than life. Old world New England meets the supernatural in a judicial face-off where the stakes are literally life or death. Overall, "The Devil and Daniel Webster" by Stephen Vincent Benet is a classic legal suspense thriller that is great for anytime one wants a quick satisfying read.

The story has lost none of its impact over the years. The kindle edition was obviously scanned and turned into text by software. The spelling and usage errors introduced by this process were not corrected out. This fine story deserved to be proofread and it does not appear it was. I would have given 5 stars without the introduced errors. The story itself is certainly worth the highest rating anyone can give. I do wish there were more stories by Pulitzer prize winning Stephen Vincent Benet available on the kindle, even with introduced errors. His prose is excellent and I have read many of them in old books. I am a poor judge of poems. The Pulitzer Prize was for the poem John Brown's Body.

Nephew, an inmate, asked if I'd research The Devil and Daniel Webster, interested in something particular about it (I've forgotten the part he asked about) so I simply ordered the book for him since he'd likely ask for more information anyway. The book was shipped quickly and arrived in excellent condition, received with much enthusiasm. Thank you

I love the story. I probably read it the first time in high school. This Kindle edition has an inexcusable number of typos and wrong words. I hope your copyist-- whether real, mechanical or electronic--does a better job on others.....

A classic short story. I liked the short read, but I must say that the old classic movie added something special and sinister to the story. Read this short story and find the movie on YouTube. It will make for an enjoyable evening.

I just read it to my daughter. I hope she'll be inspired to actually be curious about Webster and the Whigs. Oddly, the closest work of art to this I can think of is "Esta Vida" (This Life), a song by a Colombian singer/songwriter by the name of Jorge Celedon.
