If you like fast paced almost over the top action with an arcade like style, this game is for you. You don't need to have played the previous games to understand what is happening but, it does enhance the experience.
5/5 RE engine is wonderful.
1. Everything and I do mean everything causes a loading screen to appear. Even cutscenes have their loading screens. Modifying your setup has a loading screen. Want to test something? How about 4 loading screens then.
2. Speaking of cutscenes. It's impossible to turn them off. And you can't even skip them until you watched a few seconds. They are like youtube ads. Did I mention they often have loading screens?
3. The game incentivises you to spend real money on in-game items. There are even unique gameplay affecting weapons that you can only get by spending real money.
4. You you are forced to play 3 different characters 2 of which are not fun so it's a slog. It actually works great from the story perspective, but gameplay suffers as the result. Of you're starting to have fun and just spent all your currency on upgrading one character? Well then here's a new unupgraded one with completely different gameplay, try not to have too much fun with it.
5. Totally broken lock on. Oh you want to lock on to a flying demon 3 feet in front of you? Ok, locking on on an enemy 3 screens behind your back then. Range finding algorithms are a lost art at this point it seems.
The soundtrack of the game is amazing with all those classic dmc “techno-goth-trance tunes” and its new “DEVIL TRIGGER” song, is groovin big time!
This mechanics of the game play just like the older titles and the gameplay is very balanced!
Overall, this game puts a smile in my face for its superb RE2 engine, extremely satisfying gameplay and beautiful crafted story! Trully and a successful sequel to the series! Couldnt ask for more.
Now THIS is how it's done. After Kingdom Hearts 3's disappointing launch, Devil May Cry 5 is a breath of fresh air. Please take note Square Enix, Capcom is showing you how to properly launch a game.
Gameplay Performance:
This goes without saying, but the game looks amazing. The RE engine must work via witchcraft or something, because even on my regular PS4 slim, the game played fairly consistently at 60fps (or at the very least, very close to it), which is pretty essential for an action game that requires lots of quick reactions and timing. Dante and Nero's gameplay is pretty much the same from DMC4, with some extra customization options like Nero's Devil Bringer. My favorite addition is probably Dante's ability to carry up to 4 weapons, and change them out as you like, if you prefer certain weapons over others. V's gameplay was an interesting new addition, and it was noticeably easier to pull off SSS rankings with him. I'll still always prefer the up close and personal style of Dante and Nero, though.
The game was noticeably more forgiving than 3 and 4, at least for me. Gold orbs are extremely easy to come by, and the timing for certain moves (Nero's EX-act comes to mind) feel more lenient than they did in DMC4. This is probably the most beginner-friendly DMC game, if you don't count the reboot. That being said, there is plenty for series veterans to chew on. Most notably, they changed the configuration for some moves such as helm breaker, and added new moves in their place, while mapping the old ones to different inputs. Luckily, all of these options are changeable in the menus.
Music:
There isn't an official OST release so I can't comment on much of the music, but this is what I garnered from just playing the game. Capcom made some pretty bold musical choices, all of which are kind of a departure from previous DMC titles (with the exception of bringing back some boss themes from DMC1 when Dante fights the DMC1 bosses). The music has a lot more classically orchestral pieces in contrast to Tetsuya Shibata's very... grandiose and operatic scores. I enjoyed the new sounds a lot though. And the music changing with the style meter is an ingenious move; I loved the way it built as the style meter went up. Subhuman is still not fun to listen to though, but thankfully, Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud, and Legacy more than make up for it.
Story (Again, Spoiler Warning):
Unfortunately this is where the majority of my complaints with the game are. The story isn't bad, but in my opinion it is overly simple and not very ambitious. The whole story essentially boils down to Vergil being a jerk again, and I feel like the story writers could have done something way more creative than that.
For example, I think it was a mistake to have Urizen and Vergil (and V, for that matter) be the same person. I just don't see V as Vergil's human form, they look and act nothing alike, so I could never suspend my disbelief and buy into the idea that they were the same, during the story. I think it would have been much more interesting to have V be a creation of a wounded post-DMC1 Mundus (or be Mundus himself), since V commands Mundus' minions; Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare. It could have set up a story where Mundus is trying to manipulate Dante and Nero into usurping Urizen so that he can betray them and take the underworld throne for himself. It would also make sense for how Vergil would return, since he used to be under Mundus' control until Dante freed him in DMC1.
Also, the ending to DMC5 felt like a non-ending to me. Once again, Dante is "trapped" in the underworld (like in DMC2), though this time with Vergil, where they presumably spar until the end of time, seeing as this game was billed as the end of the Sons of Sparda saga. When Vergil was evil-talking about how he didn't care that he had a son, I almost expected a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 ending where Nero would have to kill Vergil once and for all. Also, sadly, no Lucia cameo.
Comparisons to DmC:
This game clearly takes a LOT of inspiration from the DmC reboot game. In fact, I'd argue that the final boss is lifted pretty much wholesale from DmC's final boss. A lot of the visuals, such as the city environment and the character model for Nero seem like callbacks as well. The camera slow-mo zooms and the style rank announcer are also straight out of DmC. Another welcome carry-over from DmC is the ability to replay secret missions from the main menu.
Unfortunately, DmC's amazing platforming and level design don't carry over to this game, which is a shame. The platforming and environments in DMC5 aren't bad, and are certainly a step up from 1-4, but they lack a lot of the personality that 1 and DmC had.
Bloody Palace does not come on the main game, but it has been promised as free DLC in April. I won't change my score here unless it's riddled with bugs.
Also, I've heard people complain about the presence of microtransactions in this game. I'm happy to report that MICROTRANSACTIONS ARE COMPLETELY IGNORABLE. If you simply play the game, the game will provide you with plenty of red orbs; more than enough to get your upgrades without having to pay real money.
If you're bothered by the PS4 censorship, I don't know what to tell you other than it didn't break the game experience for me. Just youtube it or something.
TL;DR Get this game, it is worth playing and replaying.
