Slow start but buckle your seat belts
on March 25, 2017
The first section about youthful rebellion frequently lacked motivation. Occasionally it was for fun and recognition, but mostly I got frustrated looking reasons for outstanding bad behavior. What did dad say? No parental control? Rewards? Penalties? Give us some way to understand or summarize in a third of the space.
The story picked up during the Olympic period and really took off during the war and aftermath. I especially appreciated the evaluations from a more mature perspective. Could have used comparisons with other paths to forgiveness such as "Truth and Reconciliation" processes in Ruanda after their horrendous genocide by neighbors stabbing neighbors. Good to credit Billy Graham but many other paths also lead to forgiveness. Glaring omission was any awareness of Japanese civilian perspective and the ordinary Mom's need to forgive author for killing her sons.
