A woman brutally murders her child and a lawyer with far-reaching political ambitions manages to get her set free. The heinous nature of the crime and lack of justice attracts the Devil's notice. The Devil decides he must stand up for the poor child and comes to earth. Once here he encounters a cast of characters who are either determined to send him back to Hell or aid him in his search for justice.
A word of warning - this novel is not for the easily squeamish. The murder the child is brutal and extremely disturbing. That being said, Christine has created a brilliant story with characters that come alive. Some you'll hate and some you'll love. The story twists and turns and keeps you guessing.
4.5 Stars! - Kate Farrell, from The Kindle Book Review

A lot of novels out there have an anti-hero, as the main protagonist. You know the score, the roguish thief, the bitter and twisted divorced husband, who comes good in the end. So what happens when you have the worlds biggest anti-hero as the good guy. It's a brave person who decides to make Auld Nick himself the "good guy " of a novel. It's has been done before, with varying degrees of success. A lot of the time the Devil is turned into some sort of comic foil, where this book succeeds is keeping the devil as a figure of fear. You'll not get any prat falls here.

This is a very intense novel, that really isn't for the faint hearted, this is no urban fantasy. It is at times very brutal, too the point where I did consider putting the book away. It's been a long time since I've read an opening of a novel to rival Masterton's Dark Angel for sheer stomach churning unrelenting horror. I'll be honest, at times the book was too much for me, but Dougherty's writing was of a high enough standard to keep me going. This is a multi layered tale that mixes questions about morality, judgement and what the true nature of evil is, and it does this without becoming clunking.

There is a probably a lot more shocking stuff out there, but just to be shocking isn't enough, you need a well written, interesting plot to hold it all together. Without this all you are left with is shock for the sake of shock. And that doesn't float my boat. This book did float my boat, although I don't think I'd try a cross Atlantic crossing in it.

This may not sound like an overly glowing review of the book, truthfully this book has me in mixed feelings, yes it it is well written, I can see the merit of the the book, it's just some of the content wasn't for me. Would I read more of her work, probably.

for those of you who like the ore extreme end of horror then this book has a lot going for it, and you do a lot worse.

this book started out great, I was totally into the story. then we get to the body changing aspect of this book and it went downhill so fast I crashed. it became repetitious and really wordy with no advancement of the plot for pages and pages and pages and pages. I usually finish a book I start no matter what, but not this one. I only got about half way and decided no more wasting my time. if she fashions herself after king and koontz, she needs to go back and reread their books and take note of how they write and keep their plots moving.

Parts of this book are revolting to the point that I wanted to stop reading, put this book down and delete it from my Kindle.

So why then 5 stars? - because the author is saying things that need to be said! This book is about truly terrible people doing truly terrible thing to others and (unfortunately) I have actually known people like this in my long life.

Any of you who read this review will also recognize people you know of who are bad like this, but not to the absolute extreme (at least I fervently hope not) described in this book. Many of us know of supervisors/managers/bosses that we say to ourselves "...you know, this person should never, ever be in charge or have authority over another human being". Well being a parent like this book's leading bad character is even worse - to the point where even the devil can be a 'hero'.

There is evil, distasteful animal abuse described, and again, as hard as it is to read this stuff I have actually known several people this bad. We take in rescued Great Danes and you would not believe some of the abuse. we have 2 right now that were starved to a point within a day or so of death. They couldn't even walk out of the pen and had to be carried - imagine a big breed dog almost a year old that weighs only 42 lbs and is just skin and bones - barely alive and unresponsive.

So, as difficult as it is to read this and it is of course a 'fiction' book, it does all of us a warning that bad things happen and bad people really do exist.

When you do something right...."God made me do it"....When you do something wrong...."The Devil made me do it"....Can you say responsible for you own actions....That we call..."FREE WILL"!We do the things we do because we choose to NOT because God or the Devil made us! This book was beautifuly done I never expected what I read! The Devil seemed to be an Angel once again,if only for a bit but he did.At the same time still remains the Devil in his deal! Loved this and couldn't put it down!I hope others will read it and get the enjoyment I got from it! Happy Reading!
